Hi all, just bought vf1000 1984 to do up. I heard that honda released up-dated valve clearances to help combat the cam problem, is this worth doing and if so does anyone know what the settings are, many thanks, Jim.

I would do a valve adjust on any new bike I just bought. IIRC, the updated valve clearance is .001 higher than stock.

Plus, doing a valve adjust allows you to look at the cams and verify their condition.

I seem to remember a "special tool" that actually pulls the cam up toward the cam cap/bearing, then like Mason says the clearance spec is slightly larger. If there's a helpful dealership in your area they should be able supply you with accurate info. It was a service bulletin that applied to a lot of v-four engines of that era.

Thanks for that, I am waiting for a service manual to come through so will check that out and increase the gap as you say. I did take the tops off to have a look at the cams, the engine has 29000 miles on it and the cams look spot on, so am happy with that.
