Is a motorcycle with 5 wheels still a motorcycle?

The bike is a BMW. Year and displacement unknown. Probably at least 900cc. The LH cylinder is visable surrounded by a crashbar. The bike could be an RT or an RS or have an aftermarket windshield. The sidecar could be one of several made to fit BMWs possibly a Stieb. (??)

Not a clue on the trailer. Looks like it's partially home built.

There are both sidecars and trailers for Honda Goldwings.

It's not necessarily a BMW, it could be the Russian knock-off: a Ural. That seems very likely. I've seen a few in my travels, but not too many.

Trailers pulled behind trikes and Spyders seem to be pretty popular too.

A rear shot of some Urals show the same basic layout. The Chinese also had a military version of the BMW called a Chang Jiang.

The first Urals were really crude. If I remember correctly the first to bring them in was a guy in my MC club who was in the potato biz with the USSR.

Now there's a shitload of them with and without sidehacks.

Riding or driving a sidehack is for most a new experience. Motorcycle author Dave Hough has a book out on riding sidehacks. For years BMW powered sidehack race machines dominated the sport.

I watched the sidecars race at the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim in 1969. Pretty darned crazy. At that time, they really were sidecar based, not the hacks you see now that almost look like built 3-wheelers. I missed seeing Hailwood and the 6 cylinder 250 race by a year. Bummer.

A true friend coming from Canada in one would have the sidecar full of Molsons, LaBatts or a leg of moose.

This one is likely a real BMW with a a new paintjob or somebody has replicated a Ural to fit. Both styles valve covers were used on the WWII Sidehack bikes. BMW also built some experimental bike type vehicles for the snow.

They say, who ever they are, some things aboot flattery. HD had a few BMWish bikes cranked out of the Milwaukee Boat Anchor Works too.

I had an acquaintance, back in the day, that used to haul his BMW race bike on a trailer hauled by his BMW street bike. He got pulled over by a cop who thought it must be illegal. He told him "we are going to sit here and I am going to look at the book and find where this is illegal." It wasn't.
