So sorry to hear about your prang, OO. And a real PITA not knowing why it happened. My last crash in 2015 happened on a great sunny day on a dry road where some numbskull had spilled a large quantity of oil in a nice s-bend. Even knowing why I crashed, I'm still hesitant about right handers and completely unnerved when the surface looks a bit dodgy. I did much the same damage as you, except I didn't rip the forks out!

Hope you feel better soon and get back on 2 wheels. At least your nice 8-spoke wheel survived!

Hey PawnBoy that is a beautiful color scheme! I noticed somebody else asked for picture of your bike's ass [Such an inappropriate request!], but I couldn't find the pic. I'd love to take a closer look a those black pipes - could you please post or repost a pic that shows how your pipes look from behind?

Dang! Double Dang! I really gotta learn to read through to the end of a thread before posting a reply.

Scratch my extremely recent request for photos of her backside.

    I don't know about that.
You get koala, wombat, echidna, and fear cat as well. Some pretty good meat combinations there.

OOTV, oh man I'm sorry to see that your 5th Gen has gone down and out like that. So glad you didn't go under the rail with the bike. Injury wise, could have been so much worse. Good on you, your skills, for coming out of it relatively unscathed, but the knee. That's freaky that there was no noticeable road surface problem to let your tyres out from under you. Every time I go into a corner now I'm going to wonder... Ffff...

I'm with Gator and Marrib - let's get started. Duct tape - check. Baling wire check. Rubbing compound - check. JB Weld - check. Soldering iron - check. Glue gun - check.

In all seriousness Darryll [Actual spelling] I'm so glad you're OK. The damage to your helmet hints at no concussion - excellent indicator. As you've observed - how cool is it to be plugged into such a caring, supportive community? You are an important part of and contributor to this community, and it shows in the responses. Thanks for the pics of each place your gear slid, took a hit, and protected you - seeing all those points of contact in a simple lowside is a real eye-opener. Thanks for getting me to look up the meaning of ATGATT - I'll keep that philosophy at the top of my priority list.

Oh, and I'll have a mint condition pair of gen 5 forks available in a couple weeks - you are welcome to them.

I have heard that if there is dried glycol coolant on the road that it can still be slippery. This is hearsay on my part, but it seems to fit.

I've heard that improperly inflated tires can lead to traction issues - you didn't lend your bike to Tom Brady recently did you?

Nope, not too many get to touch my bikes! This topic was also part of our lunch conversation, tire temps and pressures. I was telling one of my friends about how at Philip Island, when the temperatures drop, seems so do many riders!

By the time I got to my exit, I doubt cold would have been a factor and air pressure was checked prior to the ride. For this instance I ran 34/40 (f/r) just a little softer but not really under inflated. I recall running even less at the track day I did recently and not an issue at all. I think Lint's explanation make sense. All week the roads were dry, at least up until Friday when we had a little rain, enough to wet the streets but not enough to wash away all the crap on the roads, so maybe there was enough of a sheen to make it slippery.

At this point it doesn't matter, it's in the past. I feel good about how I took the turn and will most likely keep on riding the way I do, ATGATT!

Yeah, it was a weird fall. I Did the lean and within milliseconds it seems, the front caved in and down I went. As soon as my right hand slid on the pavement I knew it was not save able and I let go of the bike. I felt the bike hit me and thought it was going to land on top of me but luckily we went our separate ways. Thankfully the bike went into the guard rail and not me.

I'm sure for a while I'll be overly cautious when coming into some curves, particularly this one  but ultimately I feel good about it, I don't think I did anything wrong or different than I did before on this curve or for that matter all day earlier.

Feeling good, knee is a little tender but no pain if I'm just walking, only if I bump into something, you know how it when you're all tanked up on whiskey! Totally aware of Anthony's, they do all of the D-Store repairs and actually have two items of mine right now, a tank bag and a back pack of all things. They repaired the finger tips of the gloves you see in the pics. Great shop with a great reputation.

The best deal is that you got away from the bike and only got minor damage to yourself. I think I will leave to the "experts" to figure out what chain of events put you on the ground. Ain't gonna chimp in on that. The time line for riding at a normal clip and sliding on the asphalt happens so fast that to recapitulate those events from either a subjective or the objective that is mostly a shitload of guessing is just that.

Looks like your bike is toast. Depending on your insurance, IMO your best bet is to call it a total, buy it from the insurance company and salvage all the stuff you can. I see the "experts" are already circling for that back wheel..

    Heal up man..

Both ethylene and propylene glycol are alcohols, they dissolve the matrix in asphalt. The same can be said for a shitload of other compounds from aromatic solvents from gas to engine oil making any part of any asphalt roadway slicker than snot. Dump on some water and it gets worse since the fractions can form an emulsion. Kind of like trying to get a grip on mayonnaise.

    A French invention.

Exactly, I'm not going to try and guess what the cause was at this point, it happened. I will say that I was very comfortable in my line and speed and was on par with all the times I've taken this curve before, this time the traction just wasn't there!

Bike is definitely toast, total front end rebuild if she's going to be on the road again! Most likely it'll be considered totaled by the insurer and I'll most likely buy it back and see if it's fixable or if I have to part it out.

Note to all of the "experts" out there circling the carrion, let the body get cold first!
