Hello! My name is James. I live in the Asheville NC area. I grew up tinkering on small engines and fabricating things. I have a bachelor's degree and am a FAA certificated airframe and powerplant mechanic, but I currently design, test, and assemble electronics for an electric vehicle company. This week, I traded a 1997 Ford Ranger pickup with tranny problems and 204,000 miles for a 1984 VF700F. The PO rode 5 hours to trade so it runs, but needs some work. I've already found a lot of helpful info from the forum, so I hope I can contribute some as well! As the second picture shows, I've already pulled some things off to access some "mods" the PO had hooked to the battery.
Hi, welcome welcome. good job on the photos. Well as they say, ya gota start some where and projects like this make it all a fun time.
Welcome to the site and the V4 addiction. My 83 VF750F was a truly great ride. You don't say how many miles are on the bike, which would be helpful information to have. From the pics it looks like it has not had the "oil mod" done, which is something you will want to consider since at low engine speeds these engines were known to not deliver enough oil to the top end causing premature cam wear. To help avoid that issue it is best to not let the engine idle for an extended period of time. Start up and then ride as soon as it has warmed enough to pull away smoothly. No need to let it idle till it is "off choke". The rear air shock can fail but there are replacement options. Check out the other V4BBS as well as there are a lot of 1st gen. VF owners, information and suggestions over there as well. Good luck
