I finally broke down and ordered a topcase from ebay. It's a cheap one so I am hoping the quality will be good enough but I figured for $65 with tax and delivered it was worth the chance as the funds for toys are a little scarce right now.
I plan on fabricating the mount myself, I have access to tools and supplies needed and it's not my first disco as far as fabricating goes. Fingers are crossed. I have pics of different racks for inspiration but I was wondering what your experience in making one was? Any pics, plans or suggestions?
I know the case is a cheap one but I figure that once I have the mount , I can keep an eye out for a good deal on a better one if the cheap one turns out to be a cheap one for a reason.
I already have the factory side bags and was planning on going for the same style with the top mount but I do like the Honda one that has the handles on it.

You can still get the one from Honda- although it does cost (but not the same as the MSRP, it's gone down) and you could even get the original top cases too. I would go with the OEM because they will integrate into the OEM side bag mounts better- and having both and gone through the process of fitting it all, it will look better. IMHO.

Could do that but the whole idea is to do it on a budget of approximately zilch now that I have the topcase.

Well, I haven't fabricated anything but I mounted the OEM panniers and rear rack this winter and it was sort of a fuss getting everything in place so some wiggle room might be good. The OEM rear rack has some sort of distance thingies, which I don't have since the bloke I bought the bike from didn't give me half of what's needed for the racks, but that sort of thing could be built into the rad itself IMHO. If I understand things correctly, the distances are to clear the rear of the bike and there should be two different sizes, one to use with the pannier racks and one of you don't have them, seriously, it's about half an inch, is it THAT important?
