I spent all day Sunday reading posts on this subject and gained a lot of info. I was wondering it there is a concise list of forks, triples, wheels and brakes that are useable. I'm picking up a 98 project bike to join my 83. Thanks for any help.

I recall seeing a spread sheet over at VFRD with a list of viable fork, triple-clamp and clip-on combos. I think that fellow member JZH had a list as well, maybe he'll chime in soon.

Ok thanks. I looked at VFRD also and noticed some redundancy with here, but I'll dig deeper.

Might help for us to know what you are hoping to achieve with a fork swap. More adjustability? Stiffer forks? Get rid of linked brakes? Upside downies?

Yea it's more of a figure out situation. LOL It took me 3 years to figure out the biggest bang for the buck. I love the USD look, rc 51/954 brakes, but when you look at how the VFR handles as a complete machine. IMO other than looks, granted that's hot. But for me it really came down to just making the viffer handle as good as it can be for x $$$$, which ended up being for me, install super hawk lowers. I sent the forks off to Jamie. wa-la couldn't be happier for what was put into it.

Ok here is the deal. I am getting a wrecked 98 that low sided into a curb. Forks are broken and pretty sure the triples are bent. Most of the plastic trashed. I have seen it but haven't picked it up yet. I have ridden the bike before it was crashed. First thing after I get it is make sure it runs before putting any money into it. So ideally I would like to keep the budget low, get it back on the road as a street fighter. That's the reason I was looking at options since I need a front end anyway. Once I get it in my possession I will be more educated on what it needs and determine if it will be a worthwhile project. Thanks for the help so far.

Bang for buck would probably be a CBR600F4i complete front end, as it gets you adjustable forks (which you can then have someone fettle for you), your choice of 4-pot brakes, and I think you keep your wheel and discs (not sure about that last bit). Of the USD swaps, the most common is the RC51, but the parts are getting hard to come by. Many have also used R1 forks, but I prefer not to mix parts like that.

    Ciao,

I can confirm 5G wheels brake disc and axle bolt straight in to CBR600F4i forks.

You can. You can also use the other 4-piston calipers that look like the F4i calipers. Just match the calipers to the master cylinder and you should be fine. The CBR600F4/F4i (1999-06) had 296mm OD discs, 34/32 calipers and a 5/8" (integral reservoir) front master cylinder. The 1998-99 CBR900RR had the same, but with 310mm OD discs and a remote reservoir master. The RC51 SP1 had the same, but with 320mm discs and a 3/4" remote master. I'd probably stick with the F4/F4i brakes on the 5th gen (and its easier to buy a whole front end anyway).

    Ciao,

Thanks for the help so far. I've looked on eBay a bit and there is some stuff out there. I'm planning to pick the bike up Sunday and see where we're at.

Picked up the 98 today. It's not as bad as I remember. At first glance it looks like there is a possibility that the triples, wheel, and rotors are straight. When I get it apart and verify they are, I will probably just get some stock forks and get it on the road.
    Couple pics.

Oh my my, where you able to pick it up for a song? You know you have the good version right, 98-99s are the hot ticket, worth putting some coin in. What a great start here, fun fun fun.

Depending on the bend, you may be able to get a fork tube straightened, provided there is no crease at the bend. I did this for $40 per tube.

I've gathered triple clamps, handlebars, and forks for 2 different front end conversions: [1] F4i forks with gen 6 triple clamps and handlebars and [2] VTR forks with gen 5 triple clamps, helibars, and mello dude's fender brackets.

If you'd like to try either of these, let me know.
