VFR750 Front end swap with F2 question.

    Am collecting all the parts before beginning this project but cannot find a clear answer to the following question:

    When using an F2 front wheel and and F2 front fork assembly.

    From which bike do I use the speedometer drive?--F2 or VFR??

    During research I come up with:

    1) They are the SAME--BUT--Part numbers are different:

    F2 drive is 44800-MV9-003.

    VFR drive is 44800-ML7-003.

    Other reading indicates I should use the F2 speedo drive!!!???


    Soo need to know Which one to use AND are any modifications necessary to make it work??

    I think I used the F2 one on one of my conversions because that was the whole front end I used. But I think they are essentially the same? Now I'm not sure.

    No mods because it was made for the front end.

    Won't you also need the F2 rear wheel to keep the bike from being an ill-handling pig ?? I'll defer to capt 80's for an answer.

    Having a radial on the front and a biasply on the rear would be suicidal.

    I don't think that you can conclude anything from the part numbers. 44800 will be the generic code number for a speedo drive, then the MV9 or ML9 refers to the specific bike model, the last 3 digits usually refer to a supplier. However, being Honda, my expectation is that two parts will be physically interchangeable and may differ only in the specific gear ratio, if at all.

    If memory serves me they both fit bit the speedo is off no matter which one you use.

    Sorry wasn't more specific due to having my head wrapped around which speedo drive to use but--YES--also putting F2 Rear wheel on at the same time.

    Appreciate that concern--would have been just a BIT unbalanced. :eagerness:

    AGREED and Thank you for bringing that part of the process to light.


    During the research process I located a forum thread which suggested using a 16T Countershaft sprocket and a 43T Rear sprocket with a 120/70-17 front and a 160/60-17 rear. According to thread this results in a change of 0.008%. VFR stock setup at -6,000RPM would be 6048RPM with the new 17" wheels and a 16/43T sprocket set(or is that backwards?). I found that really helpful and would most likely head in that direction due to such a small change.

    Spot on with tyre sizes.
    Going with 120x70 on the front, will keep your speedometer reading (accurate) as per the original 16 inch tyre. As the diameter of the new 17 inch wheel with tyre and aspect ratio of 70 makes it is nearly the same as the 16 inch wheel.

    The rear sprocket needs to be a 45 tooth if you wish to keep same gearing as original. That's what I found.

    Why do you say not to run radial/bias ply? I've done it on other bikes and not had even a hint of an issue. Is the VFR especially bad? Just wondering!

    I'm running a radial Pirelli Angel GT front and a crossply Bridgestone rear on my ST1100. No signs of impending doom after 5000km of hard riding.
