My understanding is the F-2 front conversion gives bigger (41mm) fork tubes as opposed to the stock (37mm) sizes.

Have read that Hawk Bars will work but would prefer some that more closely replicate the STOCK appearance of the 1986 Bars.

    Can someone make a suggestion?

"Might" have read that 1990 - 2001 bars are 41mm and close to stock appearance.

Could a member (s) possibly verify to allow purchase of those for future conversion needs?

    In advance THANKYOU.

    Rick

90 - 97 VFR bars. 90-93 differs from 94-97 by where the pinch bolt is. Think your safe either way with the 86 triple clamp. Have a set on my VF1000F and love them

I think 98 and on are essentially the same too, just not 100%

    Captain,

    Am I CONFUSED??

I was thinking that the F2 fork tubes are 41mm and the VFR tubes are 37mm which would mean in order to use the 41mm F2 tubes I would also have to use the F2 top triple clamp.

    OR

Bore out the 1986 top triple from 37mm to 41mm.

    Members--PLEASE set me straight.

Thank you again Captain for the information.

    Kind regards

    Rick

    Wowser! Good thing you checked.

I very much doubt there is enough meat in an 86 triple to allow it to be safely bored to 41mm. If you want to do this the best bet would be to buy the whole front end off a donor bike (forks triples brakes wheel mudguard) and fit that to your 86. If it were my choice, I'd suggest a VTR1000F as that also gets you access to great 4-piston calipers and adjustable rebound damping. Next step beyond that is a CBR600F4/F4i as these are a 43mm fork with adjustable rebound and compression. I have these forks on my 5th gen with 6th gen triples and bars, using the stock wheels, discs and mudguard, and 600F4 brake calipers.

When I did this mod I used the F2 triple clamp. I just went with the F2 bars. not sure what others would work.

There are plenty of options for front ends. The whole CBR600F2/F3 front end swap (both triple clamps and forks) is the most common and seems from what I've read and done personally, the option that requires the least machining and modifying. But later front ends from other bikes can potentially give you a higher level of suspension and brakes. Whatever option you choose will be an upgrade though, even 91-93 forks with Gold Valves are wonderful compared to stock, one of my VFRs has them.

Sorry, I mistakenly said "VFR" triple clamp. I meant CBR triple clamp, there is nothing getting in the way of handlebar pinch bolt orientation.

    No fan of transplants.:potstir:

How much shorter are the CBR forks than the VFR ? Seems like too much difference in ride height since the CBR was designed to work with a lower-profile, different-sized wheel and tire, as you know. Geometry is all-important;too much change not recommended.

Seems like an unnecessary mod as the stock VFR handles nicely and predictably with the best tires at any reasonable speed. Might be better to optimize the stock setup with better shock, new front springs with gold valve emulators, etc. No need for a fashionable transplant front end on yer classic VFR, mate. Besides tire improvement, what else is better ? Wouldn't it be necessary to run the CBR 17" rear wheel too, in practical terms ??

Got Race Tech to rebuild my forks, All new with Gold Emulators. I installed a shock from Jamie D.
and it feels great. Having Race tech rebuild the front end was not cheap but well worth it. Jamie's
shock is great and I would recommend his work to anyone. I run Metzlers on it.
