I just picked up my 99 VFR after having a new chain and sprokets put on because of hard spots. The hard spots are gone but I still have areas where the chain is tight and then loose...any suggestions?

So you have your bike on the center stand and the when you spin the rear wheel the chain kinks, or the wheel stops?

I asking to find out if the problem is with the chain, or the rear wheel bearing?

The chain feels good, much better than the old one which had 20,000 mi.
On the center stand I turn the wheel and it is obvious that the chain is tight than slack. The machanic could not give me an explanation so I decided to bring it home and decide what to do.

Had that happen many years ago. I first thought the chain stretched unevenly so I replaced the chain. Problem didn't go away. I replaced both sprockets and all was well.

Igy: Ron said they replaced the sprockets, but if they didn't replace one, Ron could figure it out by counting the links between the tightness... is it consistant & does it match the tooth count of the front or rear sprocket? The rear sprocket is easy to visually inspect but the front one you need to dig to look, so just counting might help diagnose it.

Gee....don't remember if we checked that, it was 30 years ago. I do recall the rear spocket was worn so bad it looked like a circular saw blade. Figured since the rear sprocket was so bad we just replaced both.

Never thought you came across that way.
Sorry if I sounded like it did.

I'm sitting here trying to visualize how that problem would work.

If it were me, I'd first take off the front sprocket cover and see if the tight/loose happens in synch with the rotating of the sprocket. If it's more of a slow tightening, I would suspect the rear.

That being said, I hope you don't have a bent output shaft or rear axle.

EDIT: I'll check my bike here in a second and see if it does the same thing with 43k miles on it.

I want to thank all of you for the great information, any more would also be appriciated. I was able to get my bike into the best shop in Oregon yesterday but they won't be able to look at it until next week. The main machanic (62 yrs) was great and told me not to worry, he's seen it many times.
