Need advice 86 vf500f

I'm trying to bring back 86 to life and found out the spark plugs have been removed and it sat outside for x amount of years. Is there way to clear this gunk out without a total teardown?

Is it seized? If so you might be able to free it up with time and some kind of penetrating oil but it's unlikely to ever run very well without major surgery.

 

it's not seized.

 

I would not be turning it over in that condition. Who knows what kind of debris and corrosion is going on in those cylinders. You'll only make it worse.

Welp, looks like i'm going to have to rip it out of the frame yay.

 

just fyi this nowhere near ready be turned over, just adds more time into getting it ready to fire. I've been trying to avoid taking the engine out of the frame and cracking into it.

 

If it was mine, I would fill the cylinders with engine oil and let it sit for a week. I would drop the engine oil to see what that looked like. If it looked like oil and not an emulsion, I would take the alternator cover over off, and after a week rotate the engine, having filled it with oil again. When it rotates, the oil in the cylinders will be pumped out. If it rotates OK, I would then use the starter motor to spin it up. If the oil has water in it I would forget it and break it for spares.

 

i think I'll give this a shot, i got nothing to lose but an engine..

i think my C.S.I style zoomed in pics make this look really worse than it is.

 

It's not the hole. It's what's inside the hole that is worrisome being exposed that long. Soak with oil and have positive thoughts. You're right, nothing to lose.

 

Should I use something like mystery oil?

you could also use lanolin oil.. poor it down the spark plug holes and will help loosen and lubricate.. you don't need a tonne of it just a good dollop down each hole and do the above stated oil and rotate.

 

I'll go pick up some this weekend start to let it soak.

 

My advice would be to do a compression test before any teardown. :lemo:

 

what's the best method to test this and to make it sure it's correct.

I'm waiting on my Gauge to arrive. i should just hook this up and disable the coil packs?

 

Remove all plugs b4 testing, and use a well-charged battery. Pull out the fuse for ignition or unplug the cdi box.

ANY oil u added will boost the comp reADING, but you're just looking for any cylinder that's way below the others. Hold throttle wide open when cranking.

 

Well I'm just hand tuning it ATM, my carbs our not on at the moment.

Can't get a good test by hand-cranking, and no carbs is no problem.
