Just go to one of your local used car dealers and ask them how they do it.

When I replaced the gauge cluster on my bike I just removed the old speedo from the housing and put it in the case. My housing was all busted up but the gauge worked fine.

    Best suggestion so far.

You can't just "roll the tumblers" unless you're a Swiss watchmaker. The parts are housed in a stamped steel frame that is peened together(you'll know what I mean when you take the gauge out); it would be very difficult and time consuming to accomplish.

I only know this because I took my gauges apart to switch the bulbs over to LEDs... :ninja:

back to the drill thing... what about running it forward? Isn't the speedo rolled over at 100,000 on the old ones? And my second question, does the mileage go forward if the bike is off the ground and the rear wheel is turning? If so you could do the 'Ferris Bueller Method' in forward rather than reverse. If not, I'd just ride the bike a whole lot, then when you cross 100000 it'll look like it has way less miles and you'll have to tell people no it actually has more than that... I don't think I'd risk breaking all the little parts inside the gauges, but that's more due to my hamfisted nature.

I did that once and melted the cable outer. More lube may have helped but...

I once tried a drill too, in two days the drill (Bosch, expensive!) was dead, the bushes totally worn out. and it only reversed about 4000km. Eventually dissembled the speedo, opened the dial and managed to reset it. one must be careful though, if you let something slip or assemble incorrectly- problems... Be sober when you do it :)

Pretty sure Stephen King answered this for the OP when he wrote Christine.
