Same deal in Oregon.. Most folks who don't need to wear glasses buy the cheap stuff at big box, drug and dollar stores. They come is diopter sizing and tinted versions for one paso and up. Quality frames or frameless glasses come in so many configurations that on the internet sites that sell online that it takes page after page to see what is available.

Increased peripheral vision wearing granny glasses is not gonna work. Bigass lens' and frames or frameless to match will get ya more peripheral acuity. Contacts are fine but overall eye protection just ain't there. Then again some folks have better peripheral vision than others. Granny glasses make ya look like Yoko Ono anyway.

Everybody's a fucking expert based on very little experience other than a crappy pair of one peso shades.. LOL

Those mall opticians make a fucking fortune selling frames. They are not doctors...after the eye exams are done, the drill is to turn ya over to some chica with big tits who will try to sell ya the most expensive frames in the joint limited as they are.

Best deal if ya have to go retail is Costco....Even Wal*Mart in some places have optical..

It's the law in most places that after the eye exam, the customer is to have a copy of the prescription. Make sure it includes everything. Now and this is fairly recent even the big retail outfits have online info on how to read a prescription.

I've been wearing prescription glasses for the last 20 or more years. No issues with them fogging, I have more trouble with faceshields doing that. Also I've never been bothered by the glasses moving on my face and affecting vision. About the only irritant is an occasional need to slide them back up my nose.

Contacts started with contacts in '92. Got one pair of prescription glasses never could get used to them. Contacts don't slide off your nose, mess your vision up of you try to look far to the left or right, nor do they get jostled around especially when hiking, off-roading (4X4, ATV, dirt bike).
And finally sunglasses, gogles, always go over contacts.

Contacts can and do come out , get lost , and dry up sometimes.
Strangest thing I had happen was loosing my right contact it was the last one of the set , once I lost it I had to go without, except maybe when night driving where I would wear my old backup glasses.
After a few weeks without (vision isn't that bad), I never even noticed that I wasn't wearing them and went several months without ordering more.
Later in the summer after riding woodland trails all day w/ no goggles I start feeling something funny up around the top of my eye / eyelid , later when I got home and whatever I had gotten in my eye was still bothering me , I go to the mirror to try and see if my eye ball was scratched or swollen. Five minutes later I am looking at the contact that mysteriously disappeared months earlier. Somehow it had rolled up and got in behind my eye. It freaked me out. Next day I called the eye doctor and he assured me that it was fairly common and as long as it was already out with no problems then all was OK.

I guess each have their benefits, and it really depends on what you get used to but with the new extended wear, multi focal, colored, and astigmatism correcting contact lenses nearly anyone can get extended wear lenses that come out either weekly or can be left in for an entire month then taken out and swapped for a new pair. It's hard to imagine glasses being the more convenient option. You can always carry a small lens case and glasses for emergencies
At first you will be encouraged or required to go with standard lenses that come out nightly until your eyes adjust/ show they aren't sensitive to infection.

But for me contacts are a no brainer.
I suppose, with laser and LASiC eye surgery fixing your vision with only a 1-7 day recovery time, 30 years from now the younger generations will wonder why anyone would bother with contacts or glasses.

I looked into LASiC but would have lost my great near vision to fix my distance vision. They offered me blended vision where one eye works well for near stuff and the other for distance, and I tried that with a single contact, but couldn't stand it. I'm in an industry where safety glasses are the norm, and have a great pair of polarised sunglasses, so wearing specs is no burden.

Have worn both glasses and contacts on the bike. Not at the same time I hasten to add.

Originally wore glasses then like you took a chance and opted to try contacts , have astigmatism . Loved the contacts and had no problems with them even on all day rides. Due to prescription changes, read old age, I've had to resort back to glasses for the time being. Looking to try varyfocal contacts next time I visit the opticians.

I agree. Everyone knows those wire rim shades aren't really glasses.

Thirty years from now they'll remove your eyes and replace them with little TV cameras. I got this from one of those fucking experts.

Have been riding with eyeglasses for many decades, probably the last decade or so have been using medium sized lenses with rigid frames and straight arms making them more comfortable and easier to slide into the helmet similar to belows Oakleys, never seem to have peripheral issues though I'm not a 100% kind of rider and the VFRs mirrors are rather good.

Flexible frames are no good giving me an odd distortion inside my helmet where the world looked very tall and skinny. Always specify the thinest lighest lenses available with anti fog and anti glare which makes a huge difference when riding or driving at night, cost is high so wait until sales time, look after them so they last 4 or more years and get back 60% from my health fund.

Great to read more insights on this issue. Awesome timing too...annual eye exam is Friday.

I have tried glasses with anti-glare and prisms for night driving when having issues. I'm also slightly farsighted (only affects reading) and at times I have double vision when eye muscles don't work together well which comes on unexpected. The prisms were to help with that.

But I'm bad about wearing glasses all the time as I was told to do. I do, however, keep an eye patch with me if the double vision hits.

But Arrrr, mateys!..Do I wish I could make those objects real...especially when seeing two motos!

Thankfully, my vision is still good enough that I don't need vision correction, but only sun glasses to help with brightness... extra layer of solid eye protection can't be bad, since vision is somewhat needed while operating a vehicle.

I wear prescription glasses all the time. I am presently wearing variofocal glasses or should I say glass (blind in my right eye so there is just plain glass in that side of the pair to balance things out). The plus side of that is that I only have to pay for one lens !! the other being clear glass is free.

If you think glasses play with your peripheral vision try losing one eye (ride with one eye closed for a while to try it out), that really f**ks with peripheral vision Lol !!!

Over here whatever is immediately in front of your eye has to be BSI (British Standards Institute) approved if you are on a motorcycle, but if you have your visor down that is fine because all visors have to be BSI approved. It is to stop your glasses from being the first point of contact with stones or other debris from the road to ensure the glasses don't shatter and the glass shards going in your eyes. Technically that means if I rode with my visor up, and my glasses on I could be arrested by an over zealous cop for a traffic offence. If no visor then I would legally have to wear BSI approved safety glasses over my prescription glasses.

    Be safe folks :smile-new:

So far the vote is: 12 glasses, 6 contacts, and 4 neither. I'm kind of surprised that the glasses wearers outnumber contacts by a 2 to 1 margin and the neithers by a 3 to 1 margin. And I'm really surprised that the corrective lens wearers outnumber the no corrective lens wearers by a 4.5 to 1 margin! This may not be a fair representation though given that the thread title is such that it might only be of interest to corrective lenses wearers and therefore the poll oversamples folks that wear glasses or contacts. Either that or we're just a bunch of old guys with bad eyes on this forum - LOL :playful:

The shades don't make my vision "bounce" like prescription glasses do. I hate that.
The wire rims fit inside the helmet better than those Drew Carey style plastic frames.
Using sunglasses means no need to carry a second tinted face shield.
    Vision is handy.

The poll was skewed from the beginning adding the "other" category. Other might include the wearing of clear or tinted glasses over contacts for eye protection, anti glare and polarizing the light. Some may wear contacts who are farsighted and need to work close up and vice versa. Then there are various bifocal and trifocal lens. These allow the fast guys to text at the ton and check to see they are on the ton and dialing the wife and not a girlfriend who may have similar numbers.

Another factor is that on hot days and even on cold days some riders crack or even ride with their visors wide open. In the compilation of state requirments, for eye protection, states that mandate eye protection likely favor glasses over contact lens'
