Back in the 80s I used to carry small ball bearings and flick um over my shoulder for the unruly tailgater.
They never knew what hit um
When it comes down to sow, it's no experience that's the problem---- who the he'll doesn't look over their shoulder?
1000 miles a year probably is the first clue

Gotta love the stats posted by experts on fatal traffic accidents who rely on the usual booze and drugs numbers to "prove" their findings. At the end of the short list then come the "distracted driver" BS, which covers IMO, the whole issue.

Shit Johnny fucking law I only drank 12 beers. You call that distracted? Fuck you cop and fuck yo mamma to.

Camera? That is the ultimate witness! I purchased one of these by GoPro. Small, waterproof, great image and simple one button operation. I put it on my 06 windshield with a GoPro suction mount and it has been rock steady. You get a battery life of about 2.5 hours of continuous recording time. Has a clip mount that makes it easy on and off.

When Pulling ove a long side of the road, just angle the bike towards the road, before you stop. Then you dont have to turn your head so far to see, when it comes time to merge.

When changing lanes, glance over, then accellerate a car length or 2. That gives you a little space cution, just in case.

I went to the Motorcycle Superstore show room, in Louisville Saturday. I wanted a new, hi viz jacket. I dont know if it will ever keep me from getting squished. Not much helps when Shanequa is staring at her new "smart" phone.

An employee at the Motorcycle Super Store said that cell phones were killing the street bike industry. As a semi driver for UPS, i see drivers with a cell phone in their hands, probably 50+% of the time. They run off a straight interstate in perfect conditions. It is scary.

Sniper. I don't think that the high vis jacket will do a lot to make you safer from the asses on cell phones. Maybe just a little as the colour may attract their attention to it. But for the overwhelming numbers of more attentive drivers, it will make a difference for sure. Also, in the unfortunate event that you are struck but Mr. or Mrs. asshole on the cell, and you survive, you should be able to show the courts in civil action that you took that extra step to try to ensure your safety and visibility. So I tdoes makes a positive difference.

Ball bearings will get ya busted unless ya have the races. Caltrops can be made from tin cans. The dudes in Cal when I lived there used rolls of dimes. The new Trump dime will be made of aluminum so they probably won't bounce. The new dime as well as all US Currency will bear his image including the three dollar bill. The peso will remain the same. We certainly hope the Trump checks will not bounce.

Some dudes carry a pocketful of cheap marbles; some carry big pistolas.

Having lost the sight in my right eye a couple of years ago (and as you know over here we drive/ride on the left), so overtaking traffic is on my right, I cannot use the "lifesaver" look anymore to the right to see into my blind spot. I ended up bolting one of these Riderscan mirrors up underneath the top edge of my screen to use instead.

    http://www.huntercreate.com/

It allows me to keep looking forward but gives the ability to see into the blindspot and as far forward as just in front of where the mirrors are bolted onto the fairing. It ain't the prettiest thing in the world but it works and allows me to keep biking. At one point I also had a wireless reversing camera bolted under the top case at the back and a wireless screen at the front but that was just overkill.

I forgot about that issue DED. If you want something you learn to adapt don't you? I would think that mirror set-up works quite well. You don't need to see well enough to perform surgery, just enough to know something is there.

It doesn't compare to loss of eyesight but when I broke my right foot, well lets be truthful here. My fucking supervisor broke it. Can't even call him and asshole. But I do think he had a previous lobotomy. Anyway, I now had to drive with my left foot which took a day or so to get proficient with. Also broke an arm in boot camp and still had to tie a tie and run a floor polisher, press shirts and all that shit stuff you do in boot camp. When I broke the right arm later we had computers so I did not need to learn to write left handed.

Surprising how adaptable we are in virtually any set of circumstances if we want/are prepared to be. There's lots of people out there who will just throw the towel in and wait for someone else to come along and say "there there now, let me do that for you"
Sod that, it's gonna have to be something absolutely devastatingly enormous to beat me !!

Be safe, keep it rubber side down

Ain't that the truth. I also ride a road bicycle and some people will give you some room, others have no regard for life at all (or they don't see me - I can't be sure).
