I have recently bought another vfr750(18,000miles) and it has clearly been sitting awhile(10yrs according to the registration tag) any tips as what I am going to do is a bad idea or will work, I want to turn the engine over with out starting it using marvel mystery oil and 10-40w non motorcycle oil, then drain and replace with fresh oil(same non motorcycle oil) and a engine cleaner made by gunk and use as directed, then get a good motorcycle engine oil.
For the fuel system I plan to use seafoam and high grade gas, and a good bit of carb cleaner.
If anyone has a suggestion about what I'm doing, if it's right or wrong or you know of a better way to clean the inside of the engine pls drop a line.
What brand oil and filter do y'all recommend?
Also looking for fairing preferably new ones, and not the airstream race fairings, I'm trying to make a street bike not a track star.

What does the old oil look like? If clean, turn it over and then check for coolant or a gas smell. If everything is OK, drain the old oil and replace with a Honda OEM filter and oil of your choice. Synthetic is best but mineral oil is great to a point. Flushing is just adding unnecessary chemicals, unless the engine is really contaminated. Carb cleaner may damage the old o-rings. You may have some carb problems unless the PO drained the carbs and even then 30 YO o-rings may be cracked and leak. Mine were actually all in good shape but I replaced the float bowl o-rings with newer viton o-rings and float needle/seats also. The stock leaked. If you have to pull the carbs, replace the boots also.

    Flush-Shmush!

Agree with 2wheel Drift. Why do you want to "Flush" the engine? Is there something bad in there? Is the oil contaminated? Coolant? Just drain and refill once or twice. Do the coolant as well. Check over the clamps and hoses. I think this flushing is dreamt up by people wanting to sell you something.
For the carbs., either remove the 4 carbs and send them to one of the guys on the forum, or follow a service manual. If you look on the forum, you'll see lots of carb. cleaning help. I recently learned, the hard and slow way, to do all of the steps asked of me in the service manual. Might be a good idea to look in the air box before starting engine, to confirm there is a filter and a mouse doesn't live there! Start slow. I got a 1987 Honda VFR700F2 about 3 years ago now. It had been sitting for "10" years. (Why is it always 10 years?) Started it warmed it up and changed oil and filter. Wasn't running well, so then I removed the carbs and cleaned them. You do not need to separate the four carbs to clean them. Be careful with the float bowl screws, as they are really soft! If you are not comfortable cleaning the carbs I'd consider sending them to one of the guys here on the forum. I believe I know of two. Well worth it, I am told! I'd also recommend not using fuel with ethanol in it if at all possible. Where I live, it is available in the premium grade only. The ethanol attracts water, which can cause issues, among other nasty stuff. Keep an eye on your brakes as seals and/or hoses go bad after sitting. Geez, I better quit, already. Good luck. I think you have just bought the best VFR engine ever made!
