    New Zealand friends...

I haven't been connected to news at all this weekend and just saw about the earthquake.

Are you okay? Are there any efforts underway that we can help with from afar?

Thinking of you, your family, and friends. :( <3

On behalf of my fellows, thanks for your concern. Two fatalities and a lot of property damage, but the area hit was lightly populated. The bigger issue is roading as the town of Kaikoura is completely cut off by slips as is the rail line, and the airport is only suitable for light planes, so the Navy is stepping up.

    Ahh. Good to know, Terry.

Got messages from two of my other buddies down there last night.

Glad everyone is mostly safe. Property can be repaired and replaced, lives cannot.

Lot of people and cattle cut off completely, roads and rails cut in several places, going to be tough going for awhile. Hope 'Grumpy Old Man' is OK, he just moved back there from Australia.

Grumpy, those cows will run out of grass to eat very quickly, wonder what those poor cows are thinking, what the hell happened here. Not an easy job to get them down from there, the calf may be ok but a 500lb cow is a bit harder. Glad nearly everybody is safe. NZ isn't called "the Shakey Isles" for no reason

No need to worry about the cows
According to the news report I read they have gotten out of their isolated prison

But it would of been pretty freaky being there when it happened from the cows point of view

The small town of Kaikoura will no doubt suffer from this event due to them being on the main hi way route and relying on tourism dollar to provide a large part of their economy

The roads both north and south of the town are still blocked and will take possibly months to repair to full operating status

They are evacuating people that don't need to be there via helicopter from the town only being held up by the weather front that is crossing the country with wellington being flooded and experiencing high winds

The Navy is on the job with supplies and evacuation as well even the US navy is assisting with a couple of helicopters from a vessel that is currently visiting

It will take time but material things can be replaced and buildings rebuilt but the real cost will be the psychological and emotional issues that many will take away from this

I wish all affected people and families well
