I did actually lay my hands on the VFR800 this weekend. I have a voltmeter fitted, a non-standard RR and I have soldered the stator connectors, but lately I noticed the voltage was dropping just a little; at best I have seen 14.1, but that was down to 13.9 so I decided to investigate. I cleaned and added dielectric grease to the the RR: loom connector, 30A fuse blade, and then the battery connectors and finally the earth bolt for the loom. Magically the bike now shows 14.2v, so I must have had a dirty connector in there somewhere.

It does seem odd that the charging circuit on the negative side from the RR passes through the loom to the frame and then back to the battery post. I would have thought that a better option would be a direct connection from the RR negative to the battery, which would bypass a lot of potential failure points. Jeff is that what you have advocated in the past?

Rode the canyons today. Gotta love Malibu Mountains. This morning I was surprised by an EXCELLENT rider on a BMW 1200 GS. That guy was super smooth and very fast in the tight twisty roads. Stopped at the rock store, had breaky and then went for a casual ride around for a while. Got gas and then headed back up to the mountain again. Lo and Behold, a Lamborghini and a M5. Hmmm, this should be fun. I found out that in twisty tight roads, $400,000 cannot get away from a $1900 99 VFR. Got my bike nice and toasty tho. Looks like a coolant flush really is going to have to be done. I've been putting it off because I have been riding mellow, but I don't have a choice now. I want to do a track day soon, so I will need it as cool as possible.

Amazing that I kept having to brake for a Hypersports car. I guess power to weight has it's advantages. The guy was on his car pretty hard too. The BMW M5 hung with us, but he kept disappearing and then reappearing. I'm definitely putting sport tires on my bike next. Not sure which ones yet. No issues with the T30 EVOs at all, but I want that extra layer of grip. I found out how hard my Raza brakes too, lifted the rear coming into tight turn. I'm upgrading the Galfer pads to EBC HH and flushing my brakes fully next chance I get.

That's quite interesting Lint about the cars

I have owned in the last past a Subaru WRX STI with a few tweaks to the suspension

In the tight stuff the Bikes were always slower until they got a straight longer than 300 meters long and then they would clear off for a bit until the road tightened up again and the grip offered by the AWD with super sticky RE001 tyres and the excellent Brembo brakes came into their own and you could reel in the bikes quite quickly

BUT I did used to drive that car like I stole it with little mechanical respect once it was warm and it kept coming back for more

The route you see in the video starts on PCH and goes up Las Flores to Hume RD. to Rambla Pacifico, which will become Piuma RD. about a mile or two North of where the video ends. There's another road just beyond where Las Flores T-bones into Rambla Pacifico and that road (Schuren RD.) takes you to the top of the ridge where you can intersect Stunt RD. or continue over to one of my favorites, Tuna Canyon. Tuna Cyn. is a one way road that goes from the top of the ridge down to PCH. I think I have a video of Tuna Canyon posted somewhere on the forum.

You might have been surprised if the guy on the BMW was driving either of the cars too. IMO you'll get surprised at a track day too, by a lot of guys. For some comparisons when you go to your track day find oot what the track records are for a bike and the same for a car. With some digging other track records should be available.

A few comparative lap times both in practice and during a race or qulifying at Laguna Seca by some really fast guys.

    Lap records[edit]
On August 20, 2006, Toyota F1 test driver Ricardo Zonta set an unofficial lap record of 1:06.039.[7] The previous record time was 1:07.722, set by Hélio Castroneves in a Penske Champ Car during qualifying for the 2000 CART Honda Grand Prix of Monterey. The unofficial record was re-taken by a Champ Car on March 10, 2007 by Sébastien Bourdais, who lapped in 1'05.880 during Champ Car Spring Training. The unofficial record was again re-taken by a Formula One car on May 19, 2012 by Marc Gené, who lapped in 1'05.786 in a Ferrari F2003-GA during the 2012 Ferrari Racing Days.[8]
Officially, Castroneves is still the recordholder as the times of Zonta, Bourdais and Gené were set during exhibition and testing sessions, and official records can only be set in race conditions (either in practice, qualifying, or during a race).
At the 2008 Monterey Sports Car Championships, David Brabham set a pole position time of 1:10.103 in a Le Mans Prototype.[9]
The fastest lap at the 2006 A1GP race was 1:17.951, set by Nicolas Lapierre.
At the 2012 United States motorcycle Grand Prix, Jorge Lorenzo set a pole time of 1:20.554 on the Yamaha. During the 2014 Superbike World Championship season, Tom Sykes set a time of 1:21.811 on the Kawasaki.[10]
The Porsche 918 Spyder held the previous production car lap record with 1:29.89.[11]
The 2016 Dodge Viper ACR holds the current production car lap record with 1:28.65.

Got passed one day Westbound on Washington 20 by two old Mercedes-Benz Gullwings a 1955 and a 1956. Me and about 10 other riders and we were zipping right along. We estimated those old rigs were at aboot the 130mph mark.

Then again you may be one of the fast guys or it just seems like it.

I thought I was one of the fast-ish guys, until I rode behind that guy on the 1200 GS this morning. However, in the afternoon behind the Lamborghini Aventador the road was warm, so I was pushing a lot harder. I have a whole new respect for the brakes on my bike now though. I do know though that they can be improved with better pads and a good flush. I'd love to repeat today after getting the suspension on my bike redone.

Westlake Blvd to Decker Canyon to Mulholland, to PCH. Fun roads. Mulholland had some gravel and rocks on it about 1/2 way down. Kept me on my toes. Saw two moto cops that appeared to have pulled over a RC8, but the rider wasn't there. It didn't look crashed, but I could only the right side.

Try Highway 23 to Mulholland Highway to PCH, probably easier to find in Google Maps.

Latigo is one of my all time favorites! This was part of my run yesterday too. As was Piuma, Stunt, Tuna Cyn, Mulholland and Old Topanga Cyn. Note that all of these roads have a high amount of bicyclists as well as other motorist, so going fast can be quite dangerous! Sometimes these cyclist like to ride 3 abreast and to come around a turn and almost catching the back of them can definitely test your skills! Some of them are cool and will move out of your way, provided they hear you coming others like to stay on their line and make you go around them.

I gave them a wide berth yesterday and when/where I could would just cross over the center line when going around them. No need to create any drama or more animosity between the cyclist groups. As it is the residence seem pretty pissed either group is there but hey, these are public roads and fun ones at that!

Here's the route I did yesterday, Starting in OC which means taking the freeways 405 and 10 to PCH to Las Flores. Up Las Flores > Hume Rd. > Piuma Rd. > Shueren Rd. > Stunt. Down Stunt > Mulholland > Las Virgenes (AKA Malibu Cyn) > Piuma Rd. Up Piuma Rd. > Schueren Rd. > Tuna Cyn > PCH. North on PCH to Latigo Cyn > Kanan Dume > Mulholland > Old Topanga Cyn > PCH > 10 > 405 home! Basically a figure 8 inside of a huge loop!

Crazy fun, doing the math makes it an average speed of 32mph, just says just how curvy things are. Perfect?

A lot of cyclists east of Latigo. West of it there weren't any. I'm still impressed how everything works on my old bike. Almost 72,400 more on it and still running the stock suspension. Pretty impressive indeed.
