well, just got back from a 6000 mile trip down thru the mtns, and another 2000 a few weeks before on the 00, Did the same basic trip and miles last year on my 05, before having mental problem and selling it and buying a vstrom! course I have fixed that problem thank god by finding the 00 in time for my trip.....anyway..

Interesting always reading the pro's and con's of the two, and now I have my own opinions..

OK..these are stock, don't care if mods will fix them, just a comparison of stockers..:)

My findings... I did find the 05 a bit more comfy, better seat for me and passenger..looks the same, but it aint..
Also a noticeably better suspension, just more planted in the tight ones and especially the bumpy tight ones..

Biggest difference...the motor, my current 00 consistently gave me 5 mpg better mileage and on a few tanks when i was runnin low and slowed to the speed limit and laid on the tank it got 65 mpg cnd!!! twice! Never did I ever see over 50 on my 05... on the trip and thats very important to me as I like to be able to get somewhere without stopping a lot.

the smaller tank took me further than the 05 did because of this.

above 80 mph cruising all day both fell way off.

power is close, although I still have the same bike to test them against and in this case my 00 is quicker then my 05 by more than a few lengths. Every time..

My 00 doesnt have any trace of a efi stumble or the jerkiness my 05 had at very low speeds..although the 00 doesnt like a long cold rain and my 05 wasnt bothered.:)

So in the end the biggest diffs for me are the 00 has the better engine, the 05 has a nicer chassis and body.

And I hate that digital speedo on the 05, i like my needles!! just my opinion again..:)

Kinda a trade....I enjoy them both, although I would still take another 05 as i like the looks more, dont mind the v-tech gimmick, useless as it is, I enjoyed the supposed kick it had..I do however now enjoy the whine of the camgears more than the vtech...

now thats just a opinion...but thats how it seems to me after having both..
hey..Honda...just make me a 05 chassis with a 00 engine and a few more ponies and I would buy one!!

Just curious, how many miles do you have on each bike? I know the ride on my '00 began to feel very harsh after about 23k miles.

    the 05 had 30,000km918,000 miles)
this 00has 49,000 (30,000)km on it now..i did redo the forks, set the ride height proper, someone had dropped the forks to far, , went to 3 clicks on the rear preload and 1.5 turns out on damping and its working very nice..not quit like my 05, which it shouldnt since thats why they make new ones..:)

another note..just figured it out..i got upper 50's for mileage on the 00, never got over 50 on the 05.and thats running 10 mph over any limits..or more..:).one day i ran her low and it took 5.05 gallons..:) too low..but i knew i was in trouble, layed down and slowed to 70 mph and the bike got 65 mpg out that tank..thats cnd mpg..you need to subtract 20% for us...

I was very impressed. and lucky...

and man do these tires (o21)
ever work nice..looking like at least 40-50% more mileage outa them than my 020, and dunlops..

fun having had both versions..love em both

Having gone from a '03 Vtec to a '99 Gen 5 Mk 1 in '05 I concur with most of your observations except in my case fuel economy.

My previous Gen 6 would get an easy 220 to 230 before flash start while on tour, the Gen 5 only about 190 to 195miles although this is probably down to your naughty Gen 5 having O2 sensors leaning the FI out on cruise.

i think i will run this one a while and see what honda puts out..if i go newer i would probly try something diff like whatever they come out with if i like it, or a sprint st.... or just run this one..i still plan on a week ride in sept around hells canyon area, and a 4000 km run to manitoba and back..so she will get a workout..

But yep i am really happy the mileage is up there, hopefully the next vfr has real variable valve timing and something that will get it some decent mileage..Unlike some..I do expect a bike to do better than the civic.....:)

    will see
