Of all the safety gear I have, a chest protector is the one item I don't have. Always wear my back protector though. Although one of my textile jackets does have soft amor chest protector pads in it.

A lot of the newer jackets are coming with the insert pocket for the hard shell chest protectors. This appears to be a more recent trend as I don't recall seeing this on older suits/jackets. I might consider one but the snug fit of my current suits wouldn't give me much room for it, especially if I have the back protector on.

At this point, I feel really sorry for the rider that lived. It will haunt him until the day he dies.

Great point about the loved ones. I think there comes a point that we can't ride with enough protection. We're all taking a risk we choose to take. Unfortunately, idiot drivers are out there. That's why I ride with the thought that every cage is there to kill me. It's just which one will try. And then, we have the ability to hurt ourselves with no help. That's where, experience, education and judgement comes in. The Dragon seems to negate those three things in many people. I've come to think just getting on The Dragon is a bad decision with all the crazies on it.

Bottom line don't try and ride a over weight bike down a twisty road fast and don't let someone ride closely behind you- wrong bike and wrong partner, wrong road too. I almost got hit the same way- rider up front decide to brake fast with another bike following too closely. I was unloading a truck those Harley idiots almost hit me-glad their bikes go fuk up LOL! This was a accident bound to happen.

Have you seen the air bag jacket? Crazy tech. Next thing you know there will be suits that puff up like the Pillsbury dough boy. :)

Yep, the Dainese D-Air suits are about $2,500.00 but currently are only on the 1 piece suits.

I was there just a week before with my father. That must be an awful feeling to make a video like that. My heart goes out to his buddies family.

This is central to my philosophy. Riding motorcycles is inherently risky. I have to balance that with my life and the needs of the people that love and depend on me. I go out in all my gear when I ride. It is a PINTA but worth the effort. I do not go to race on the street or to prove how great a rider I am. I have nothing to prove. I already know I suck at riding fast. I don't need to throw my bike down the road to remove all doubt.

One could think of buying one of those suits to be an investment, a safety issue and even making one a better rider. Show up at bike nights, toy runs, hog wallers, and charge say a buck a throw for inflating the thing. The safety issue might be up for grabs still. In one scenario, a high side might toss a rider into some rosebushes and let the air oot of the whole thing. Weight being of great importance to some riders even those who have a shitload of stuff packed with them at all times in some of that luggage that looks like some disease and who could keep the weight down by cutting back on the Jo-jo's might be able to fill the suit with helium whilst riding with just a little creative valving.

I wonder if they will get around to sort of matching the colors on the various bikes or like some of the leather garb that looks like some exotic insect or frog straight oot of The Amazon.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety study found that cars with antilock brakes are more likely than cars without them to be in crashes fatal to their own occupants. In particular, antilock cars are more likely to be in fatal single-vehicle crashes. The study compared the fatal crash experience of cars with antilocks and otherwise identical models with regular brakes. Could a "safer" suit also cause an increase in crashes as the rider feels less vulnerable to injury?

I completely believe this. I never saw where anti-lock brakes stopped me quicker than I can do it. Just my experience. Just more gubment control over us.

I checked out Insurance Institute for Highway Safety website. This pages summarizes their results for ABS. Key point is that there's a difference between cars and motorcycles. Yes, they didn't see a difference for cars. But they absolutely saw that motorcycles with ABS had less severe accidents.

This article titled "IIHS study: Motorcycles with antilock brakes are much safer" from consumer reports summarizing IIHS motorcycle ABS results.

Actually I was using the anti lock brakes on cars as an example of a device the adds to a person's sense of invulnerability to real danger. I am sure that anti lock brakes on bikes are safer and I don't think they add to a rider's over confidence.

I openly admit I am newbe at road stuff but grew up racingmotocross and feel as if I have a fairly decent skill set in regards to brake control and ability to stop quickly and efficently . I also believe in a total " oh sh*t" situation where a microprocessor modulates the braking pressure at 15hz is better than me any day of the week. Should you be able to disable it on adventure bikes and to purposely slide it around, sure , but otherwise a properly functioning abs can only be an asset IMO.
