Finally switching out the burnt bulb in my 2000 VFR instrument cluster.

Will replace with LEDs..... best color?

I've seen pics of the blue which looks good but has anyone gone with red or green?

Thanks to all, Glenn in San Diego-

Having personal experience trying a couple different I can offer the following:

The LCD screen is fine in pretty much any color so it would be personal taste. I have blue LED's in the gauges and for the LCD screen and don't find that either is too bright, even at night. Keep in mind that for riding at night any bright color can and will create a possible issue with your night vision. It can take some time at night for your eyesight to adjust after glancing down at the gauges if the clusters colors are too bright. I tried white, blue, red and orange. The red and orange showed very well on the LCD screen but did NOT show up very well at all behind the gauges. RVFR linked to a thread above by vfrKat, and vfrKat noticed that the plastic screen behind the gauges had a slight bluish-green tint and this hampered the red lights passing through the gauges. The needles on the other hand were ridiculously bright.

The blue and white LED's had no issue lighting up the gauges, though the white LED's were VERY bright IMO and made the gauges really bright at night. I settled on blue LED's for both and got the LED's from www.superbrightleds.com. I chose ones that did not have a super high lumen rating so they do not get
too bright when night riding, not that I do it a lot honestly.

You will need 5 LED's in total for the cluster, 2 for the LCD screen and 3 for the gauges. I personally wouldn't change the turn signals or warning lights to LED's since they are rarely lit up and he cost of the LED's, versus regular bulbs, are far more expensive. The one thing you are supposed to do is color match the bulb color to whatever color lens the LED's shine through. ie Orange for the turn signals, and blue for he high beams etc if you do change the upper bulbs. If you, or previous owner of he bike, have never changed the bulbs in the gauge cluster then you might consider changing all the bulbs just so you never have to worry about it again.

Just what I was looking for zoom-zoom. My instinct was to go with red. Gauges are the most important vs LCD screen so I probably would have been disappointed. Will stick with blue and leave the indicator and turn signals as they are. Rarely ride at night, not that concerned with a high lumen number. Choices on lumen? Thanks for the link and all you input. really appreciated.

When I purchased the LED's a while ago they actually listed the lumen output of the LED's in the specification tab once you selected the bulb you wanted. There were a bunch of blue LED's listed and all were a slightly different output. You definitely would have been disappointed with the red. The needles shone with tremendous glow but even in the pitch dark the gauges were hard to see. The LCD in red was bright enough to tell the color with the sun shining, but not so bright that it was hard to look at when it was dark. You could go with blue gauges and a red LCD, just to be different. LOL

Thanks again on this....finally got this done with Jtech Blue LEDs. Couldn't be happier with the result. BLUE was definitely the way to go. New excuse to ride more at night.
