I purchased my 2006VFR today and have been itching to ride. I went through the owner's manual and did not see anything on the break in period. The dealership told me to return at 600 miles for the $160 break in. I have owned several GSXR's and traded in my 2001 CBR for this baby. I did most of my homework and read all of the great reviews for this bike. I love the fact they retain their value really well. I just wanted to say hey, and hope someone would reply about the break in period. I thought there was a limit on the RPM's at the begining.(never owned a new bike) I kept it below 6000 at first, and had to resist the urge to let her rip. If someone would hit on some points for me it would be great.(rpm's to shift, V-tech kicks in when?,best operable temps, speeds, how to make her really run) I just need a little advice, I look forward to the reply, and will post a couple pics of my baby asap.

    thanks,

    andy

Hello. I have a 2007 so I would not think the break-in information could be that different.
My owners manual (Page 222) states the following: "..paying extra attention to how you ride during the first 300 miles." "During this period, avoid full throttle starts, and rapid acceleration."
    Hope this helps

bought my 06 in May. Read a bunch of different things on the break in period and was told different things by different dealers. So this is what I did. First 100 miles kept the RPM's under 4500, next 200 miles kept them under 6000 with once or twice a day up in vtech. Next 300 normal riding keeping under 7500 rpm. After that, normal riding, no real limit on rpm (but didn't keep at high rpm very long). I was told to make sure you start working through all gears and throughout the rpm range earlier to allow better break. Somewhere along the way someone posted a "new method" of break in that showed the engine broke in better, with more residual horsepower, etc by not riding it real easy early on. Made sense to me. I now have 2000 miles on the bike and it runs flawlessly and gets about 38-40 mpg mixed riding.

Thanks soooo much, I have been told so many different things from keep it under 10k to not over 5k. Like I said I think I saw almost 9k once but its so hard to keep her on the low side. I quickly brought it back down to 5k and intend on keeping it there according to your post. With 43 miles on the OD I really want to baby this bike. I intend on keeping her a good decade or so..

This is my second vtec i'm running in so no vtec for the first 500 miles, up and down through the revs up to 7000 in all gears, and that's all you need to do really. Once the oil change gets done you can let her rip

All honda dealers i talked to suggested the same thing, most of these engines are semi run in anyway.

X2. this is what I did. After 300 miles, I took it to Vtech about once a ride, if you can resist this, you are a better man than I.

Welcome to the group. You will hear many different ways to break in a bike. I think what has been said here covers it quite well and you should have no problems following these. Some manufacturers recommend keeping the RPM's below a certain point, like 6000, so as not to put undue stress on the valvetrain and such during break in. After 600 - 1000 miles, the engine is pretty much run in.
