The higher the gear, the lower the mechanical advantage, the more stress on the clutch.

I just picked up a 1993 VFR750 today. Love the bike already. I noticed the clutch slippage around 7000-9000 rpm as well when accelerating hard in the upper gears. Thanks for the info here. I will change the oil soon to see if that helps at all but the bike has 91,000 kms on it so I suspect a clutch plate change may be in order.

Where do you recommend getting parts for this bike?

Niiice! I do love the look of that model, especially in pearl white!

I bought a set of EBC friction discs, plus new springs, plus a new gasket, all from Partzilla. My old clutch had 94000km and the discs were pretty worn and black. With some new clutch parts, it's like new again.

Is that all I need? Or does one have to pull it apart before ordering parts?

It's all I needed on my 5th gen. You would also be wise to go through the hydraulics as well, refresh the fluid, lube the lever pivot, clean around the slave cylinder and clean and grease the pushrod, but there are no parts to replace in all that.

Thanks, I will do that as well. I have a buddy who is pretty good mechanically, so he will be "assisting" me with the work on the bike.

I ordered the clutch plates from Partzilla and ended up doing the job myself. New clutch works like a charm.

Never have done a clutch but do you need to soak the plates in oil before installation?
    Or am I high?

Some say to soak for an hour or two, others say overnight. Might as well do it overnight, that's what I did.
