2008 Honda VFR revealed in new motorcycle patent

    Details of Honda’s 2008 VFR1000 have been revealed in a newly published motorcycle patent document – which shows the motorcycle to have a radical new frame design.

    The Honda V-four sports tourer motorcycle, which gets a capacity boost to 1000cc for next year with an all-new engine, features a two-piece chassis, with separate front and rear sections. The engine itself provides the majority of the motorcycle's frame strength.

    The front section of Honda motorcycle frame, incorporating the headstock, bolts to the engine in three places, but doesn’t connect directly to the swingarm pivot point. At the back of the motorcycle, there’s a separate aluminium casting which holds the swingarm, shock mounting and the seat subframe.

    The patent also reveals that Honda hasn’t yet ditched the idea of a V-five engine, as one picture shows the same frame design with a five-cylinder motor bolted in place of the V-four.

    Good thing about the 750/800 VFR's is that the engines are rock solid and Honda long ago worked out any major issues.
    That's the only bad thing about getting a "new" motor design is that there are usually bugs to work out.......after you have bought it. Not only that, I love the looks of my '07 RWB!

    I think they're on the belly exhaust bandwagon too. Probably going to trend to a smaller, sexier tail though.

    At least the drawings shows a front mounted radiator. And it does look like the under-belly muffler. Looks like modern forks with radial calipers. Should significantly lower the resale of our bikes if it indeed is a liter class bike with upgraded suspension. :rockon:

    You will have a KLASSIQUE bike that is worth what it is to you. Smile, others have to ride lesser bikes. There is almost always the unobtainium bikes above what one currently has... now I guess if I had a Britten...

    I don't plan on getting rid of my 5G, but I'll be the first in line to buy a V5 liter-bike to park next to it.

    So, is it definitely a V5, or is it a bigger V4? I have never really heard of an odd-number of cylinders in a "V" configuration.

    I sorta with Rev - Just because Honda filed a Patent, doesnt nessessarily mean there will be a production bike to follow.

    Having worked in the corporate engineering world for too many years - sometime patents are filed just to disallow your competition of going that way. Also experimentation of products is a constant. I'm sure the bike exists in the experimentation world at Honda, but its a maybe yeah, maybe no for a real product. It would be cool though.

    If you read the article ( I had to read it twice ) it says that Honda appears to not have scrapped the V-5, as one of the design pics (as posted by SLOav8r) shows a V-5, but there is one that also shows a V-4.
