There is already a law against loud pipes in Denver and I guess it gets enforced at the cop's discretion. However, the city is getting even more petty and going into something they know nothing about. They have passed a law that mufflers need to have a EPA sticker on them saying that they are sound reduceing. I live here and I am always getting focused on it seems by their pet projects. I need to check for this sticker. What does it look like and if I don't have one. Where can I get one?

    What about tourists?

So, if I wanted to take an eight hour ride and check out the mountains and stopped in Denver; would I be subject with out of state plates or is it just for the locals?

That sounds similar to what our State government was doing last year. Bikes had to have a compliance label on the exhaust or you would get fined.

I contacted Staintune through my local dealer & they sent me a label. I'll try to remember to take a photo...

That's gotta be directed at all these obnoxious straight-pipe farting Harleys around here. I hope they do something about it, I can't stand having my ear blown out everytime one of these guys rides by me in my cage.
Instead of focusing on something that effects noone but the rider like helmet laws they should be cracking down on this - it is way too annoying, and doesnt impress anyone but other Harley riders.

I think its for the bikers in general. But they say its meant to harass everybody. At $500 a ticket I bet they are going to be handing them out like crazy.
I don't think they will bother out of town folks though. But Denver thinks it is above every law and they are god so I wouldn't doubt it if they just took your bike and auctioned it off.

Don't know for sure on this one, but it would be very rare for this to be a locals only thing. Usually it is operating a vehicle on their roads, you are subject to their rules. To do otherwise, would be unheard of, and so rife with potential enforcement issues as to make the law worthless.

Nearly any time you see any bike bans, whether in gated communities, or like when Chicago tried to ban them on a main public drag in the city a few years back the number one cited reason is noise -- by far. As the saying goes, loud pipes risk rights.

As far as not being EPA or CARB approved, that is already on the books, but rarely enforced and a Federal statue in the case of the EPA. Local states or juristictions essentially copy the existing law, to make enforcement and punishment easier at their level, and to send a message to the local populace. If you look at most aftermarket pipes, it usually says somewhere somthing to the effect of "for closed course competition use only." Otherwise they would run into trouble just for marketing them.

No, let's be honest, it is also caused by and directed at, sport bike riders too. Aftermarket pipes are just about as common and annoying to the general public as well. One man/woman's music, is another one's unbearable noise. And the average Hardly rider almost certainly says the same thing about us and sportbikes.

I like my double exhaust and that is the way it can to me. I need to get some stickers I guess? Would anyone be able to help me find some stupid stickers to throw on my pipes? I have a feeling that all the bike shops around are going to have them but at a premium.

A Harley with their big engine running straight pipes will literally shake the road with it's flatulence, that's where the term ground pounder comes from. It is WAY louder than any sportbike exhaust I've ever heard. I hope Denver writes all of them tickets.

And when they are done with the Honda Davidsons they will start writing tickets to everyone else. I don't trust my city to use common sense. Its not that common in the city gov.

Make your own stickers or stincles... type what you want it to say on Word then tape off your pipes and stincle'm with high temp paint on the back or bottom... The manufacturers will always do it their own way and unless you get pulled over by an evil kinevil he ain't gonna know what the sticker looks like only that it should say EPA approved somewhere.

Where I live in a town in MD where the small, historic main street is like a canyon. The Harley guys intentionally rev it up when the roll through town and it has literally made my ears ring. They have also done this intentionally when the ride by me when I'm on my bicycle. It's kinda sad how desperately they want attention. I would LOVE for them to get ticketed a they are way above the allowed noise level. I asked a cop buddy of mine about it and he said it is just one of those issues of not wanting to start hassles between the local riders and the cops.
I once owned a Ducati that had these crazy loud Two Bros. Titanium pipes that were put on my the previous owner. It set off car alarms. I hated it and was going to trade the expensive aftermarkets to someone for a stock exhaust. Instead I just got another VFR (which I like better in every way).

I hear you. When they are at stoplights and blipping the throttle next to you, it's very annoying - but when they take off full throttle :mad2: it's almost enough to make me want to carry a shotgun - remember the ending scene from Easy Rider?

And when they take off full throttle the noise sticks around for a while because it takes them about 24 seconds to get a quarter mile away. (If they spent an extra $8K on the Screaming Eagle performance upgrades)

Great point - their throttles are more like elephant fart volume controls than speed controls!

Stillwater MN is also doing the noise thing but they have yet to figure out exactly how to check it, either with the db meter or just by the emissions notation on the can. Again I am sure it ill just be at the cop's discretion. I sure hope they like VFR's or sportbikes in general!

The straightpipes that the harley guys have in my neighborhood are SO LOUD that if I have my screen door open, I cannot even hear my TV, or make a phone call, until they are at least 1/2 mile away. Sets off cars alarms each time they roll though.

Oh I'm sure they'll have their eyes on us out of staters, since we can't/won't fight the tickets. $$$

Yep, it's their state we are in, and their laws we have to abide by. I don't really feel all that bad about this (depending on the method of enforcement) because if they just go after bikes that sound outrageously loud, then I would have no problem with that. You and I just rolling thru semi-quietly, should have nothing to fear.

Turn off the motor and coast on by. That's what I've been doing.
