VFR 1200 DCT Catastrophic Engine Failure at 17000 miles.

Honda fucked up a lot of the 1200 motors and won't admit it or stand by their product it is that simple

 

that is true- Honda wouldn't get away with that here maybe or they did LOL! I get 2010 model and then sue Honda for one Billion.

Final update: I have today received a letter from Honda UK thanking me for writing to Honda head office in Japan.

Honda UK say that after reassessing my case in consultation with Honda Japan, they are happy to supply me with a new engine free of charge and pay for all labour charges.

So all is well that ends well and this story reflects badly on Honda UK who had to have their arses kicked by Honda Japan before coughing up and agreeing to get my bike back on the road.

Lesson learned: If something goes badly wrong with your Honda, don't mess about with MCIA arbitration or Honda UK...Go straight to the top.

Honda Japan are good eggs. VERY good eggs!

I kinda thought you'd get some satisfaction, if you didn't call em' a "bunch of thieves", and you'd never deal with them again. I do NOT like to hear that you had to go so far to get them to cover what they should have covered right away. Good on you for not quitting, though I think you were close! Hope you are happy with the results. Right on!

Why is it someone with an obvious problem with the 1200 like NormK and DOESNT OWN ONE, is always on the 1200 section badmouthing a really phenomenal bike ?
This isn't the first 1200 thread wherein he shoots his mouth off about a machine he doesn't own and has probably never ridden.
What I don't appreciate is his trolling the 1200 site.
Just my 0.02 $ worth.

Been following along ,reading supplemental links, etc. Quite glad you got some relief here. Hope that the guy that puts your motor in does a really good job. I am quite sure they don't want Honda Japan on them yet again. Lol

Good on you for sticking with it ,no way any modern engine that is reasonably taken care of, should meet such an early death.

 

This type of crap is not limited to Honda UK. A bunch start at the individual dealerships. There is no real indicator for the good dealers vs the bad dealers unless customers use the tools at their disposal to ID the bad guys.

This unless the MC dealer was a car dealer, then all bets are off.

Just in response to your points:

1. I bought my original VFR800 the year it was launched in 1998, and apart from the known issues of regulator/rectifiers and a few LCD panels suffering, there have never been any serious or common issues with engine or mechanical reliability on any VFR 750 or 800.

2. Anyone who doesn't wear earplugs when regularly riding on or near motorway speeds, especially with full face helmets, will suffer permanent hearing damage. There are some good earplugs (the ones with ceramic inserts) that are better at selectively filtering out the harmful excess noise.

3. I suspect that Honda will not wish to tarnish their reputation if this becomes widely disseminated.

I believe the last time there was a serious issue with Honda motorcycle reliability was with the original VF1000R which was nicknamed the "Cheese cam engine".

It was originally thought that the serious early cam wear was due to lack of cam hardening and faulty manufacturing or bad quality steel; however later analysis proved it to be a lack of oil pressure to the cylinder heads due to undersized oilways that blocked up too easily.
When Honda brought out the new VFR range they specifically over-engineered the unit to ensure unrivalled reliability, which was proven in the real world, as many VFR's from over 20 years ago with 100K miles or more are still running perfectly with only standard servicing.

 

The VF750F's had the terrible reputation rather than the 1000R's.
The more authoritative sources give the cam failures as being due to;
Poor machining tolerances in the cam bearings (not line bored)
inclusions in the cam castings
thin hardening in the cam lobes.

I'm not certain which it is but Honda did produce many head and cam revisions for the VF series.
