I went for a short night ride, just before getting off the highway is when the fun starts. At first I started to hear a rattle when going over bumps, sounded tinny and hollow.

Then I have something like a bolt hit me in the foot, I dont think much of it because I'm still on the highway. 10 minutes it happens again, I pull over immediately and find the offending bolt:

Curious, you say it hit you in the foot, ok, but does it again, where'd you find the bolt? Doesn't look like it has thread either, so it's a pin? I see a grove for what could be for a cir clip. hmm, left or right side? I'd have to go look if i see anything like that.

This particular bolt came off the right side, I picked it up off the road so no idea where to start. Seems like an engine mounting bolt but like you said it has no threads. I'm fairly sure the first bolt also hit me in the right foot.

Did you happen to notice a harley ahead of you? I think I would be pulling the plastics of that bike and finding out where it came from if it came from your bike before I rode that anymore.

No Harleys lol. So by the time I got home, I had 4-5 metal objects hit my right foot :(. Perfect timing with my 599 blowing the regulator and harness 2 days ago. I'll update after I strip the fairings and do some poking around.

In the meantime, feel free to guess away :)

I would say that isnt off your bike. Firstly there is no thread on it secondly there looks to be a hole drilled in it for a retaining pin.

My guess is that if you were dropping bolts one after the other, something major would have also fallen off by now.
I think I know my 5th gen inside out, and I can't recall anything in there looking like that.

Good answer. I will look at my kit later today. I do recall seeing something of that nature in there.

Check your front caliper immediately!! This could be the pin that keeps the pads slide on.

The pin on the VFR caliper is actually threaded. Hard to tell in the pic but it looks like a locking pin but one that requires a cotter pin.

Maybe off another vehicle kicked up by front tire, my pins on the 83 are not threaded and held in by a clip, my '14 pins are threaded.

Yeah, probably opened up while riding. I know I had a tool bag from another bike split open on me, after all they're just hot sealed seams on a plastic pouch.

Yeah, they're like that on my Ducati, damn hard to get the clips in or out sometimes. His 5 Gen though does have the threaded pins.

Glad you figured it out, looks like a hex drive or extension, hard to tell, left end out of focus.

Glad it didn't get caught between your chain, that would of been disastrous.
    Never heard of this happening---
