If they still have the passion to ride a motorbike then maybe the best advice is to take time to heal fully, then enrol for some professional follow up training before making a decision to get a replacement bike.

In Europe there are plenty of training schools who run excellent follow-up training for bikers, with some courses specifically aimed at helping bikers get back their confidence after a spill using loan bikes suitably kitted out with heavy duty crash bars. The sort of courses arranged by Advanced Riders groups usually start by simply observing your riding for an hour or so, and then over several weeks help you to focus on areas where your riding skills are weak. Over several sessions riding with other advanced riders you will be continuously observed and quickly learn just how important your positioning is.

The Motorbike Gendarmes in most Departments of France run an annual Moto Trajectories course - which apart from the cost of lunch is entirely free. The courses are brilliant and booked up months ahead. The mix of classroom, private track and on road practice sessions really helps emphasise how much more we all have to learn. Then just when you think you are doing well by threading your VFR confidently through a twisty course of cones, they spoil it by showing they can zoom through the same course with a fully kitted out FJR at twice your speed.

Heal quickly and if you decide to get another motorbike remember ATGATT.

What?.....since when does suggesting someone obtain a concealed carry permit so that he can protect himself should the need arise... equal telling them to sling a clip of lead into a windshield of an oncoming car. That is the most ridiculous thing I have every heard .
The guy has been robbed or at least had his bike stolen more than once ,been run over more than once, this last time it certainly looked intentional. Say the next time he shows up while their taking his bike, or possibly he gets rammed and rather than driving off they decide to grab a bat out of the trunk or even just get out and kick him while he is down. You know what he's gonna wish he had a weapon.
It is quite obvious the OP lives in and around an area where there is criminal activity. In many circles the crooks know who can and will defend themselves and who is an easy target. Theives are most usually armed , just incase and are typically unstable and dangerous.

An honest man who lives in, around or near a "Bad part of town", and isn't prepared for situations they will inevitably face is asking to become a victim.

Keep in mind this does not mean they should brandish their weapon and foolishly sling lead at everything that moves their direction. To even think of something like that as how one might handle a concealed weapon probably means you have no business in the same room as a firearm or at least not without some serious counseling.

Just recently in FL an officer blew away a deaf guy during a traffic stop, apparently the officer somehow got the idea that the deaf gentleman was somehow a threat.

If this can happen accidentally to an unarmed deaf man , when coming in contact with a trained, licensed, man who is sworn to protect and serve, and certainly would not want to harm an innocent individual. What of a man or woman who comes in contact with untrained criminals and drug addicts many who could care less about their own mothers.


I don't mean to push the hot button here but suggesting someone get a concealed carry permit, is a far cry from the ridiculous scenario suggested with comments such as what if you shot them while there foot was on the gas... well unless their wearing lead shoes once their hit their foot is coming off the gas.
Of course it is a bad idea to shoot into a moving vehicle, but take toward an officer, who is on foot, a bike, even a bicycle, as if you intend to ram them and see what happens 99 times out of 100.

Vids can be deceiving due to optics and "frame rates". I'm seeing, I think target fixation by the OP, hauling ass in a mall parking lot, probably booze or one of the many distractions that come these days with both drivers and riders. Ride the fucking bike just for sheer joy of doing it.

Plenty of room to move over in that vid. IMO anybody with that track record should give serious thought about hanging it up.

Some good ideas here. The Catalina cat hunt ain't new by a long shot. The deal before all the tree huggers got into the picture was the locals using single shot 22s went out, bagged a few cats then they could harvest a pig for the barby.

The low cost option is what I use-just get out of the way! LOL! do anything to get out of the way-brake , speed up, stop- think ahead, always have a exit plan

I'm glad the OP is not seriously hurt, and meeting up with an impaired driver was certainly unlucky, but I tend to agree with you. Not the best example of defensive riding on the part of the OP.

By the way that is exactly what Motorcycle school teaches, I went to a school for three days including basic riding. Don't put yourself in a bad spot that a car can come and run you over, when stopped on the road-get off the road as much as possible. I may drop a bike but I so far have not been in a accident. sometimes I am like my Hero Donald trumpet and like to make stupid comments. It took me a while to get great with the VFR, I am now a good rider=its a nice sporty ride and great on bumps, stops really great too-.

 

SOW, "great on bumps" is a bit of a stretch, don't you think?

 

No not at all, my Yamaha R6 was really bad on bumps-to me a VFR is like a Cadillac. I did add a dmr rear shock that helps a lot too-this winter I am going to send the forks out to have them perfect.

 

SOW has bumps from being dropped on his head.
