Got a helmet cam last week, and the one thing I noticed was the effect of the really wide angle lens. It makes the initial view of the on coming car look a lot further away than it really was and gives an aggregated sense there was more time to react.

Seeing the vid it looked like they had an idea you might be coming back through the parking lot, and just flat out gassed it when they saw you. Of course the lens can distort things and I can't see anything about what happened just before the video starts when you were driving past the other entry to the parking lot.
Was this person already being obnoxious, or done something to mark themselves as a non-driving fool?
Either way it sucks looks to me like they gassed it just to nail you. Definitely try to stay far far away from idiots like that in the future, like not even on the same block far away.

Best of luck getting healed up, finding a new bike, and keeping away from idiots in the coming years.

    Later,
    db

To me you target fixated and froze. You hit the brakes and stopped in front of her. I don't understand why you were on the left side of the lane/middle. Didn't you see the car coming? At which point you should have moved to the far right and been hyper vigilant until the car passed. You were out of position, straight up. Heal up, but you need to seriously look at this and very bluntly and very honestly see what part of this you can take responsibility for. You were out of present time, thinking about something else, it appears.

Motorcycles aren't more dangerous, they are just extremely intolerant of stupidity and inattention. Not being fully present in the moment, doing what you're doing, while you're doing it is a recipe for disaster on a bike. Riding while you're lost in thought, or a song etc, is asking for trouble. You basically have to assume that car drivers are drunk, on their phone texting, Facebook or Pokemon Go. Always give yourself an escape route, which you had, in spades. You have to use it, which you didn't.

I'm not trying to be an ass, nor am I trying to brag, but last night if I wasn't paying attention, I would have hit that little girl, because of a mistake she made. You. Have. To. Be. Aware. At ALL times and you have to be lightning quick with your reactions, which, in all honesty, you weren't.

I would like to add a caveat to this. If the camera adds a fish eye view effect to the video, then maybe you had less time, but you were still out of position and it really appears you waited WAY too long to react.

I agree with Lint, I wasn't going to give the guy a hard time, but it looks like he was partly responsible.

    Back on topic...

There are a couple of options to consider when assessing whether the risk of riding on the street is "worth it" anymore.

Let's be honest, street riding has risks. The reality is if you are doing everything correctly as a rider, collisions are unavoidable in 10% of "close calls". I don't know the real statistics, that's just based on nearly 40 years of riding motorcycles. Wildlife, disintegrating semi tires, antifreeze in a curve, erratic drivers, mechanical failure, etc. are issues you can't plan for.

Some alternatives if you decide to hang up your helmet I'd suggest would be an open top sports car or a Jeep Wrangler. A jeep gets closest to the open feel of a motorcycle with the doors off and top down. I went this route once and may do it again later down the road. If you need speed, an open top sports car may fill your needs. I don't begrudge anyone deciding get out of motorcycling; if the risk isn't worth the reward then find a safer alternative.

Maybe if you get the stolen bikes back and got the wrecked bikes for a few pesos, you could go into the parts biz and either buy a new bike or buy a surplus military HumVee.

I guess we were a little to hard on him, although I didn't think so, since he made a couple posts and has disappeared. I thought most of the posts were pretty constructive without hammering the guy that much. I know on some forums he would have been hammered into the ground.

You guys need to take a chill pill and be nice to the Noobs. We are here to have fun and help each other to be a better rider.
We are not here to judge...! You might be a great rider but the man up there is the one will choose if your time is up. People do make mistake and they pay for the consequence. Have a great week and ride safe.

Being new to riding bikes on the street, I am sure if he had it to do over again things would be different, point is it's too late. We often make less than the best decisions, spur of the moment, especially if we are in unfamiliar scenarios. I hope by bike #5 I will be past this stage.

I recently got run into by a dog ( he actually hit headlong just in front of my forks , possibly even clamped onto my fender at that time (or maybe when he came out from under the front tire after I had got up). When I saw him I could have easily grabbed the throttle ,fluttered the clutch and dipped away to the far side of the road. Or even revved the motor and swerved away. I didn't I held my course and grabbed the brakes. In hindsight it was probably the worse thing I could have done.
I went down got injured, wasn't wearing my gloves, etc. So sure that dumb dog plowed into me quite literally, but had I at least had the rest of my gear on, or even reacted differently it could have been avoided. I am still on my first 100 miles as a street bike rider, (not counting dirtbikes up the road) and chocked it up to a learning experience.
But had this happened to me after several bikes wrecked and stolen, and many miles under my belt I would quite literally feel like it wasn't mean for me to be on two wheels and definitely seriously consider hanging it up.

To answer the OP's question unless I had an absolute passion and desire to ride, I would find something else fun to drive that isn't as easily stolen or ran over. A big jacked up Jeep Wrangler, or a BMW M3 convertible as someone already mentioned can be alot of fun and definitely give that wind in your hair sense of freedom.

I would get a concealed carry permit as well, someone purposefully charges you with a car while you are riding/walking. It is considered assault with a deadly weapon in most states and you can typically defend yourself. Don't know if this has ever happened but aftier being robbed and taken out nearly half a dozen times......

    Just my 2c

My 2 cents. This has to be the most ill though out comment so far. A 5,000 pound hunk of metal is coming toward you and you pump a mag load of rounds at the driver. So. Say you kill the driver who has their foot firmly pressed agaisnt the accelerator. Now what?

A sound minded person would never shoot at the driver of a moving car. That is plain dangerous.

    You rode without gloves?

That is risky enough but shooting someone for a traffic offence?

    That's simply madness.

I feel very bad for the OP and his painful injuries, but like many others, the first thing that came to my mind when watching the video was why is he on the wrong side of that dividing line and still continuing to stay in the middle of the driveway with that car coming right at him with plenty of time to scoot out of its way - it was painful to watch. There are many types of accidents that are unavoidable but that was clearly one of the avoidable ones IMO. That said, I still feel bad for the OP and I hope he has a speedy recovery.
