I switched from a Yamaha 600cc to the little R3 about 6 months ago, been having issues with it stalling and randomly dying at stop lights all along, leaving me like a sitting duck in traffic. Other R3 bikes and even FZ-07 and FZ-09 have reports of this same issue sporadically. I've done several things (remove canister, remove air pump, increase idle) and still it coughs very badly one out of 25 times, etc. Almost assuredly to do with excessively lean ecu programming. I don't really want to spend another $500 on a PCV to roll the dice on resolving the issue, as I'm not entirely pleased with power for freeway. Power is "alright" and "not bad" but ... I think I'd rather just switch machines. (1) Does the 2014+ VFR800 have any sort of stalling issue, or any other similarly annoying and sporadic issue reported? (2) Can anyone compare/contrast the Interceptor to the Street Triple, with respect to seating position? Which one has less forward lean / or is more casual comfy?
I blagged an 8th Gen as a loan bike for a couple of hours whilst my 6th gen was in for new tyres. To be honest the riding position felt very similar to my 6th gen (which has helibars), so there was still some weight on the wrists but for me it would be quite acceptable for long haul trips across Europe. The bike felt both narrower and lighter than the 6th Gen - and was more inviting to be pushed hard through corners - a bit more sport and a bit less tourer - the vtec transition was less obvious but even so the bike took off like a scalded cat. As for the Street Triple - which model year/version are you thinking of? I have a 2008 standard Street Triple which is brilliant fun in the mountains. Originally through to 2012 Street Triples came in two flavours standard and R, both very capable naked bikes which with a shorter wheel base and significantly more upright riding position than the VFR, means the bike can really handle twisties and almost encourages general hooligan behaviour. They had exactly the same engine but the R had better brakes and suspension - the downside being the seat height on the R was higher with no easy way to lower it without affecting the impeccable handling. Later (squinty headlight) models have a very similar upright riding position with an adjustable seat which many riders quickly found the lowest setting gave the better road manners. The last R model I rode still has a tendency to be very bouncy due to the short wheelbase - but they are still a great fun bike. These bikes can accellerate very quickly indeed but the fly screen is really only for looks, which means you are the fly screen! A long motorway trip in bad weather on a street triple can be torture with the bike prone to cross winds and obviously providing no protection in torrential rain. If a comfortable more upright riding position and a fairing is an important consideration, then depending on how tall you are, a CBF1000F may be a better choice than a VFR. SkiMad
Honda 300-class engines, all recalled recently, will spin the bearings due to metal selection, things stick if the bike sits in certain conditions. Every manuf has a lemon from time to time, that's why I'm asking. Though the latest gen VFR hasn't been out very long, and I realize it's not a popular model, relative to CBR / YZF / GSXR etc, so probably not a lot of data points. Nothing wrong with R3 engine mechanically, just lame epa / ecu / fueling issue imo. Was looking at the latest Street Triple. Then almost bought a VFR in Santa Cruz, but I backed out and got a used Yamaha FZ6R instead at the time. Hmm, if the Street is "significantly more upright" than the VFR, hmm not sure about that. I don't want cruiser / full touring position, just a mild sport posture, slight forward, sporty leg position is fine. But I don't want to be hunched over either. I tried to sit on a used VFR last weekend, was literally sold one hour before I got there. But if the VFR is too aggressive, there's a new Street 765 (vs 675) coming out for the next model soonish, and I'd just wait. I'm 5'10 though slightly shorter leg / slightly longer torso. I'm just looking for an "enjoyable casual Saturday afternoon ride" for myself. I'm not out carving tail of the dragon, squidding wheelies down the freeway, or setting land speed records underground racing. Just want a comfy casual slightly sporty ride, with enough whp to have "authoritative" acceleration through about 85-90. I've given up on finding a quality 400 lbs bike with 75+ whp and not SS position, other than the Street Triple. I think CBF1000F is one of the few models I haven't sat on yet. 500F and 300F are never on the showroom floor either.
