    Hi..

I have been having alot of trouble setting the timing on my VFR750F 3rd Gen.

I've read the manual where it says to put the the marking in the crank case on T1, and make sure the piston on cylinder 1 (rear head) is at top dead centre, and then put the cams in with the markings facing opposite each other in line with the edge of the head.

Then moving on to the cylinder 2 (front head) by turning the crank 450 degrees to marking T2 on the starter clutch and then put the cams in with the markings facing opposite each other in line with the edge of the head.

Question 1... Which markings should i use on the camshafts.. There is 1 arrow and 1 plain line on each camshaft.

Question 2... is the above method of setting the timing correct?

Any help or advise at the moment would be greatly appreciated, as i have been working flat out for the last 8 days to rebuild this motor..

    Thanks

If it's like the 4th gen, you use both. But pay attention to the manual and line up the correct marks depending on which camshafts were removed. It will say to line up either the timing arrows or timing marks (the plain line as you call it).

Did you remove front only, rear only or both front & rear cylinder camshafts?

Well i have 2 motors, one that was in the bike, and another spare.. Somehow i managed to snap a conrod, and it pushed a hole through the engine block.
So i have stripped both motors, and rebuilding 1 to go back into the bike.

Its just the timing that im having trouble with, and the service manual isnt clear on which of the markings to use.

Thanks for that... I went back to the manual, and pulled my eyes out of my ass.. and i see that it does actually tell you to use both markings..

I will update on my progress after i get a chance to put it back together again..

    Thanks again

No problem. In my manual they underline arrow and marks but it's still easy to miss / ignore. Good luck.
