After some inspection I found out that the stator on my bike is burnt up, after calling around I have been given the gauntlet in price differences.

Any recommendation on aftermarket parts or ideas on where to purchase a new one at a reasonable price?

www.servicehonda.com for a new oem stator
    www.roadstercycle.com for a new fh020 or sh847 kit

Don't go searching for cheap Chinese or aftermarket stuff, unless you like repairing the charging system (and possibly ecu/battery/etc) twice. It will be cheaper in the long run, to do it right the first time around.

Hi and welcome to the MadHouse:welcome:

It sounds like you are the latest in a long like of VFR owners with charging system problems, so when you get the chance it is probably worth at least skim reading through the following thread which explains clearly how your dead stator may have been the result of collateral damage from loom, battery or RR faults.

    http://vfrworld.com/forums/showthread.php/39277-How-to-fix-common-regulator-Stator-failures

OK your stator may be defective but before you rush out and fit a replacement it is important to check the charging system fully or you risk your new component being wrecked in exactly the same way. The same thread identifies places to obtain far better quality replacement components - and identifies a few aftermarket brands you might want to avoid (see post # 34...) If only the stator windings have fused then you may be able to get the stator rewound for a lot less cost than a brand new component. Personally if you need a reliable replacement then on your side of the pond I would contact the folks at roadstercycle.com.

When you get a chance please swing by the introductions forum and say hi to the rest of the folks on here and post up a photo or two of your VFR.

Good luck let us know how you get on.

That's good advice, except the parts you refer to at Roadstercycle are R/Rs, not stators.

They should be replaced together. The OEM rr is garbage, hense why the stator failed in the first place.

And cut the plug off between the R/R and the stator and solder and heatshrink the wires, the connector is most likely the cause of the failure on the one you have

Double check the part number of the 2002 stator vs 2003 and up, and ensure you get the right one.

Tightwad pointed this out to me.

Hi -- I have found ProCaliber.com beat near anybodys price on OEM Parts, free shipping after $99. I have used them quite a bit lately...

I have the same year and haven't had any issues yet with mine. Where are you located? I would like to help out / observe the repair if possible as I do plan on doing the drill to mine this winter, can't tempt fate too long.

They have our stator for $190.10. R/R is $118.08.

Get the Roadster MOSFET type if you can.

Also, if you haven't already ... do "THE DRILL" (search for "the drill" thread) on your bike and check the charging system. Lots of weak points in it and you will likely want to beef it up if you haven't already (see my "Electrical Load" thread).

BTW, don't toss out the stator, you can have these rewound and would be good to keep as a spare. I'd have to dig up the name of the company that did my stator rewind but I believe they are in Alabama. They were recommended by a few members over at VFRD.
