94-96 Wiring diagram question- location of rectifier?

1996 = 28000 miles finally replacing Regulator. New, Honda OEM one is finned and looks great.
Here's my question:

Part number 13 is the regulator, and part number 14 is a rectifier. The diagram shows it floating at the front of the wiring harness. I bought it because I thought it was part of the regulator/rectifier system. It is a little black plug with 3 blades. Small, only a centimeter square.

Where does that thing go? Is it under the dash? Next to the fuse box? Near the battery/main power connection?

I searched R/R forever on this site. There are so many different threads that I can't find my information in the haystack.

 

I believe it is the clutch diode, which is not part of the charging system.

 

It is for clutch switch, to prevent voltage getting to the neutral indicator. Diodes are technically rectifiers. The finned R/R is a full wave rectifer and voltage regulator in one housing.

 

If you bought a new OEM, return it and get a new MOSFET unit. I'm running 40K + on mine. Based on the numerous posts here, 25k, if that, is about all you'll squeeze out of the old OEM units.

As stated the regulator is combined with the rectifier on bikes since the 80's.

 

Alright. A little confusing on the wiring diagram.

How about the location? Now, that I bought the part, I wouldn't mind installing it. Is it up under the dash? Hard location to see.

 

Regulator/rectifier lives under the tail plastic on the left hand side. Mounted to the subframe. Remove the seat and tail cowl.

I'm asking about part number 14, the baby rectifier that the boys are telling me is for the clutch switch/indicator. (?)

If you have the VFR service manual, it's item 19 on page 1-34. If you don't have it, you can dl it from this site.

 

Its up on the right side near the fusebox just taped to the loom. You would need to remove the top fairing and then its pretty obvious

 

Loathe to remove the front fairing. Will just hold it until the day comes when it is off for another reason.
