Twas the night before monday, brand new VFR in the house,
Doing the snorkel removal mod, and I found a rotten mouse :mad-new:
The filter was full of urine and hair, my poor little engine was starving for air!

Ok, that's as far as I'm going to take that one.

Suffice it to say, if you buy a used bike off of craigslist one of the FIRST things you might want to do is check the air box for any critters.

Oh, here are the 3 things I was in the middle of doing to my VFR. Any suggestions/comments?

New K&N is on it's way! :tiger:

IMO neither the PAIR or flapper mod will derive any extra performance, but don't let that stop you.

The flapper opens up the second inlet in any case above 5500 rpm so at high rpm you'll derive no difference. At low rpm the single intake port will deliver plenty of air to the engine. Having the port open at lower rpm does make for a more characterful intake sound, if that is important to you. I suspect the real reason behind the flapper is compliance with noise regulations.

PAIR removal is worth doing just for the sake of removal of excess plumbing from a bike that already has plenty. IMO no performance gain should be expected as all the PAIR system does is deliver fresh air into the exhaust port, so after all the useful power generating stuff has happened in the combustion chamber. I have heard that maybe PAIR removal does good things to bikes with O2 sensors in the exhaust by removing any confusing lean sensor readings that would affect the PGM-FI system. Makes no difference to my old-tech 5th gen.

Hope you gave your mouse a decent burial. A more useful performance upgrade might be an ant-mouse mesh screen across the intakes of the airbox.
