Can anyone definitively say whether the 5th Gen VFR800 has a steel fuel tank or a stainless steel fuel tank?

Why do I need to know? Because mine has rust in it and knowing what kind of steel it is will determine what I need to do to it.

    Thanks in advance,
    Tom

The tanks are carbon (regular) steel. My magnetic tank bag sticks to it and it wouldn't if the tank was SS.

If it's getting rusty inside it's probably time to reseal it. I didn't search the forum but I am sure there are articles here on what product to use and how to do it!

    Cheers,

    Sandy

Thanks Sandy. But some stainless steel grades are magnetic. So the magnet test doesn't tell definitively if the tank is stainless or not.

My tank has some nice exterior rust on it, so I cast my vote for steel as well.

Thanks guys! That helps a lot. I guess I don't need to worry about passivating the tank after cleaning the rust out.

Yes, I believe its steel also, however one of the guys that mentioned that some stainless steels can be
magnetic is correct. Some of the 400 series stainless can be magnetic. Also stainless can
become slightly magnetic by work hardening or in a forming or bending process.
Been a long while since I posted ,I would appreciate any feedback on the above.
