I just received a "new" set of Metzler's from Motorcycle-Superstore.com. This was my first tire purchase from them and I was pretty dissappointed when I saw the manufacturer date on the front. It was 5214, or the last week of 2014. That means my "new" tire is already 19 months old. I have read that under 6 years old is okay, but I wanted to know if any of you pay attention to these dates and would you buy if you knew they had been sitting on a shelf for 18 months?

My other bike is a BMW, (you all know how picky BMW riders are) and this would never fly on the forum I follow for the R1200S.

    Thoughts?

Dude .... don't sweat it ... that's pretty normal for a tire (especially motorcycle) to sit on a shelf for a year and half. About 24 months is my tolerance.

If you said 5212 I'd be concerned.

I'm not worried about it. Just wanted to see what the popular opinion was here.

It will be toast long before it's 3rd birthday anyway

    Thanks Jeff.

Although that is not ideal, as long as tires are stored appropriately, they do have a certain shelf life. Depending on the the type of tire and how fast or slow it wears, could mean that you will actually wear it out before it reaches its life span.

Would I knowingly buy a tire that is 19 months old? Depends on the tire and what I expect out of it. If it's a track tire and not a sport touring tire, probably but I wouldn't feel right paying full price for it. If it was a tire meant for longer mileage, I would probably pass. But these are my opinions and how view this situation.

That being said if the tires feel hard or less than ideal (not sticky) then perhaps let them know and see if they will allow you to return them for ones with a later manufacturing date.

it feels pretty normal. i have written them, but doubt they will do anything about it.

i did get a set for $177 shipped, so I'm not too upset. best price I could find locally was over $300.

For that price I would actually feel good about it! Especially if these were sport tires, most likely I'd be wearing them out before EOL.

I get about 6k on the rear and replace the front every second rear whether it needs it or not

    I keep Michelin PR4's on the R1200s.

Really? I must be doing something wrong. The first rear was shot and showing treads @ 4,817. The one I have now has 3,600 but I was planning ahead. The last one went from looking okay to toast really quickly.

I'm planning a few weekends in the mountains while my family is in California, and I do t want to be left 4+ hrs from home with a spent tire. What psi do you run?

Well, the aggregate they use in the asphalt, your riding style, weight, etc can also play a role in this. But I think I'm pretty hard on tires. I'm constantly loaded due to the touring that I do, and I'm a fairly aggressive rider.

I run the recommended pressures, 36 Front / 42 Rear

I'm running the Bridgestone T30 EVO (this latest one though is the GT-spec of that tire) and I've had similar success with Michelin Pilot Road 2's.

I am rather fat...plus, like you, I ride with a lot of gear. Ihave Givi E360's panniers and a V47 top case. I keep my rain gear, spare tools, and a solid state battery (the stator/RR won't leave me stranded again!). When I tour, tent, clothes, etc and bring my loaded weight close to 300lbs

There aren't enough twisty roads in my part of NC, so it's 400 miles round trip to the fun stuff.

I keep my pressure the same

Hah. We have pretty much the same setup. Carry about the same amount of gear weight wise too.

    I weigh in at 248lbs.

I also say that's just fine and if kept away from UV and ozone, no problem. Also that's a great deal for tires.
