Clutch problems, won't go into gear

So I have an '86 vfr700. The clutch lever feels like it has no pressure in it like it's loose and when I put it in gear or try to at least, it kills the bike. Feels like its not disengaging the clutch when i pull the lever. Don't know how it happened, but I started it one day and this happened. Any ideas? Would it be caused by killing the bike too much? I need to resolve this asap because I just sold the bike and we weren't expecting this to happen. Thanks!

 

I have a 1986 750VFR and recently started to rebuild/restore it. I have the same problem, I've tried bleeding the clutch and it pumps but I think the seals are gone in the master cylinder and won't pump under pressure. I've bought a rebuild kit just haven't installed it yet. I'm hoping that cures the problems. I don't think it's the slave unit as everybody says it causes an oil leak that you can see under the bike. when i rebuilt my clutch system that would not engage the clutch. i rebuilt both Master cylinder and slave unit I figured for the $20.00 extra of parts in the slave, i would for all intents and purposes have a completely new clutch actuating system. it worked and I have had no problems since. due to another cause the bike is now being parted out. let me know if you need any parts

 

So replace the master cylinder at least?

 

Rebuild not replace! The kit is less than $40 bucks. The master cyl will be a couple C notes at least. Just pay attention how it comes apart, and put it back together with the new parts in the kit. Be patient when bleeding for the first time after the rebuild, it takes a while.

 

The black piston seal has a slight taper to it. The small end should face the lever.
