I just bought a used Fox shock for my 85 VF700. Does anyone know of a write-up on how to replace the rear shock? Also this shock has a nitrogen tube on it. I thought it was smaller then it really is. Any ideas on how or where to mount it? Has anyone ever run a fox shock? Any advice on this at all would be great.
    Thanks!!

The remore reservoir is supposed to run along the right frame rail and then gets clamped to the frame with 2 hose clamps. Changing the shock is pretty straightforward. You need to support the frame (not the swingarm) and then remove the dogbonesfrom the lower link, lower shock bolt and then the upper shock bolt. You'll also need to unbolt the stock shock adjustment cable if yours has one. To install the new unit, thread the remote res. up through the shock opening and out the right side of the frame, then lift the shock body up and install the upper bolt loosely. Now reassemble the lower link, bogbones and lower shock bolt. Atach the remote res. and see how it feels. You may need to reset the preload for your weight. Then you get to start playing with damping settings!

Ok great! That sounds rather easy. Anyone know anything about Fox shocks and getting them set up for your needs???

After you get it installed, back the damping out all the way (compression and rebound, if you have both). Then, with a helper, lift the rear end up to the shocks limit and measure from the axle to some point on the frame above the axle and write it down. Next bounce the rear end and measure it again (don't lift this time). That is your unloaded sag, should be a few mm. Then, with the helper holding the bike up (or position the bike next to a wall, car, etc), sit in your normal riding position and remeasure again. This is the loaded sag and should be around 25mm to start. Adjusting the damping is a personal thing, depends on what kind of ride you like. Make large changes and see what feels best. Then you get to do the same thing on the front, which isn't as easy.

    That should get you started.
