With the Honda engine you are probably ok..... I have a buddy with a 2V Ducati that went Synth too early and it cost him a ring job. I remember when the oil burn started happening, I was chasing him on his tail.. oil smoke, bleah.. - This was just 2 yrs ago.

Some manufacturers you can get away with it, others its probably not a good idea. (The ducs components are European, the pistons are English) The usuall one side doesnt fit all.

So me, for my motors, I'm a no risk kinda guy. I probably could go Synth earlier on my Honda's, but for the long haul why take the risk. That's this geeks logic. I'm sticken to a long dino break - in, changes at 300/600/1500/3000/5000/7000 and then go Synth when convenient.

    Ride Well,
    MD

Had to get my 2 cents worth in, I also have a new zx-10r green machine, I changed oil and filter at about 10 miles, replaced it with regular mineral oil, I believe Silokene, then rode it about 500 miles and switched to Redline synthetic and a new filter, seems all is well at about 1500 miles and she runs like a bitch! eddie

Only semi-related but I switched my old 98 dodge Ram over to synthetic with 85K on the clock. The only way synthetic oil will leak is if you already have a leak with dino based oil. I sold the truck with almost 140k and used less than a half quart at 5000 mile oil changes. I also use K&N oil filters without any issues. just my .02

but were those issues you saw due to the oil?
specifically the supposed "early" shift to synth?
I have done Mobil 1 at the 600 mile change, and the Honda stuff too, and even the Yamaha synth, depending on the bike
never had an issue, and yes, some of those motors went well over 25-30k
took one bike past 60k, and my 98 VFR was at 48k when it was stolen

    just cause a person did A and B happened, doesn't mean A causes B

Triumph ships their bikes with syth
Porsche, amongst others, ships their cars with synth. I have seen Porsches with over 30k on the motor, with no issues. Actually, near 200,000 miles on an '86 911, and never an engine issue.

    PETA is PISSED!!!

    :frusty:

If one more post goes to this thread about oil, the PETA folks will stop chasing Michael Vick and instead focus on the General VFR Discussion Forum. They will undoubtedly demand this Discussion be immediately deleted from the site due to your cruelty. Apparently it is cruel to continue to beat the dead horse has already been beaten so badly.

    Nice tires Reg!

I've heard the best way to break in new tires is pour synthetic oil on them after 600 miles. Apparently gives the rubber a better "bite" on the road!

I heard that putting oil on your tires makes the rubber swell up therfore increasing your final drive ratio resulting in better milage, so yes, sythetic oil saves gas!!!!

(and yes i run synthetic oil in all the bikes)

Ahhhh the good old oil tread. I see it has started to decend into sillyness. I like it. Just change the damn stuff regularly.
