Room for what under the plastic pillion fairing?

Looked at my next bike today at a dealer, this one was showing on the floor with the pillion fairing instead of the seat.

And I realized, hey, there is a lot of room under there!

So how are you using the space? How waterproof is it?

I thought for sure it would be a place to run a line for a USB charge port, into a little bag into which the cell phone goes if it's low and I am gonna run for a while.

All kinds of stuff under mine, including a cold 20 oz bottle of Vitamin Water for every ride.
Permanent items include: Micro fibers for cleaning shield, a spare set of both clear and tinted safety glasses, a 10K battery pack for cell charging, reg/ins/cash/owners manual, pocket Kleenex, bandanna, multi-style bike tool.
It's not super water proof. Blasting it at the car wash will get most stuff under there fairly wet, but a quick rain on a ride might not be to bad.

I also keep a tail bag permanently attached to my pass seat, so I can throw that on if I need more space. Then I throw on the saddle bags if I need lots of space. It's a nice little system, really.

The ST1100 I had came with a quite-complete tool kit. Quite. Enough to do pretty serious breakdowns. Does a '14 come with one?

Good information and thanks on the non-waterproofness of the compartment. I'll pouch all the stuff that cannot tolerate moisture.

But don't some of you run a USB charge port in there into a ziplock for charging a device when moving, if needed?

And if Honda has cheapened up and gives you a mini-kit or hardly any tools at all, what bits does one look for in a multi-tool? Bicycle shops carry some pretty serious tools in this category.

Only tools it comes with is the big spanner and extension for adjusting the chain. But you'll need to provide your own 17mm wrench for the pinch bolt.

Reservoir for my Tutoro chain oiler. Doesn't seem to get too wet under there, but it's not waterproof. OE toolkit, sidestand puck, alarm disk lock.

Waterproofing idea: Glue a seal around the inside of the seat cover so that it extends just below the lip line, allowing it to compress slightly against the bike when you install it. Maybe a car door self-adhesive backed weather stripping would work. I do not own the seat cover to see up close so I do not know if this is possible or a valuable idea.

There is a full tool kit under there. It's contents are listed in the owners manual. Should you care to look for it and download it from Honda.au.

What I keep underneath my seat.
Autocom, kenwood tk3201 radio, Bluetooth module, I pod,all plus associated cables scottoiler, cigarette socket, USB connector, garmin wiring. Tool kit, tyre repair kit, puck, microfibres cloth. With cowl on could put in waterproof trousers or small tyre compressor. With room left.

I took a stock seat, cut it right after the seat lock so my under cowl storage area was huge. I have a air compressor and a tire repair kit and tools and room for more. All I have to do was reupholster he seat as a solo, but you can't tell it under the cowl lid. I don't worry about water proof as everything is in its own little case, but its still fairly tight.

Thanks Fink, where did you get yours from?

You should have got it when you bought the bike.

    Pillion seat, 2 hand grips,
2 covers/ inserts for when grips are removed and cowl.
It shows them in the manual

Yes, mine came with the rear seat and grab handles fitted, plus a Honda cardboard box containing the cowl, bolts and two bits of red plastic (or white, in your case) to cover where the handles go. I assume that's what all new bikes should have.

Dealers sometimes pull shit like that to maximize profits.. The Camera business was notorious for pulling the cases that came OEM with the cameras. Many old line camera stores have boxes of old camera cases.

If the dealer in this instance is doing this, turn his ass in to Honda Inc.
