Hello everyone, forgive me if this isn't the right place for the question. So I just bought a 2007 VFR Anniversary edition with only 2500 miles. the bike was sitting since 2010--I am gonna do an oil change first. Do I need to do a coolant flush and brake fluid flush yet even tho the bike hasn't been ridden? The bike is in Immaculate condition if that matters--I don't even think its been broken in--thank you in advance for any advice.

I would highly recommend flushing all the fluids and going back with new. All oils and coolant break down over a period of time, even without use.

    Agree!

The brake fluid is hygroscopic, aka it absorbs water. Water boils and the resulting steam will not compress. This means braking is less effective. While the heat/cool cycles of using the motorcycle can increase this rate of water absorption from the air, it still happens when not being ridden.

As for coolant technically there are tests. There is a DVOM which tests conductivity in the coolant:

But, let's call all motorcycle riding, including those 2500 miles "severe schedule operation", and for that reason change the coolant.

There is an additional benefit to changing fluids: If there is anything odd going on that was conveniently left out by the previous owner, examination of the fluids can catch it.

Thanks Guys!! I will be doing the coolant and oil change this weekend. I also noticed there are 2 reservoirs --is the one on the right the brake fluid and the left the clutch fluid?

Warning in case you adjust your controls: On the brake reservoir is a brake light switch. If that touches the bar it causes a short. So if you like the controls all the way forward, back it off just a little so that the switch stops touching the bar. Crazy, but all 800's are like that. Someone just had this problem with the 2014.

Let the advice filter in. Copying and pasting what looks great out of a book can be deceiving. Honda Inc wrote the book. Interpretations of the book are not all that great when used as a single source. All bikes are idiosyncratic. Best IMO to pay more attention to advice that is of the hands on kind from a source who has actually owned a given bike or who has experience and has dealt with a bike under similar conditions.

Great idea to change out those liquids. Go by the book.. My question would be since brake fluid is indeed hygroscopic (likes water) , water needs to be introduced to the system. The system is a closed loop. A larger issue that can cause bigass problems is oxidation on the inside of the tank. Ethanol is hygroscopic. It may be the bike has been in the past fueled with a gasoline/ethanol blend. This is the other liquid that should be replaced.

Yep there sure are tests for durn near everything including coolant. What needs to be known is what kind of coolant do ya want to use and does testing coolant that has been in the bike possible since new worth the trouble and the pesos, or do ya just pop for new?

OSA 06 said it all in one sentence..

Make sure you look under the tank in the air filter, critters are known for takin over and building there nest.
Also tires, they have a date on them, make sure there not hard, blue or cracked....PR4 are excellent tires as well.
    Good luck...great find.
    Was it kept inside?
