    Hi all!

I'm a long time VFR fanatic owning several 6th and 5th gens throughout the years. I bought an 07 Blackbird about 4 years ago and loved it (apart from the fact it was an inline 4 and not a beautifully charismatic, off beat growling V4)! :listening_headphone

Anyway I was lucky enough to be accepted on a masters to study Music Therapy which meant parting ways with my beloved Blackbird; Fast forward 10 months without a bike (which has been the longest I've been off 2 wheels since I was 17) and the Spring weather here in the UK finally got to me. After a little hunting I stumbled across this little beauty..

Ladies and gents, meet my new bike - In stunning red, my 99 VFR, 26k miles, high rise Remus can, heated grips, touring screen, bar extenders and rack (with 3 Givi boxes) all for just £1600. That, as you well know is a hell of a lot of sports touring goodness for that price.. Light years more value than a ''Deluxe'' model 2014 VFR800 and as you know, this one has gear driven cams and no VTEC (Moving on before debates start)...

So far I love it every bit as much as my Blackbird which costs me triple this gorgeous machine due to finance, NEVER again).

Anyway that's me and my new bike, I'd love to know of any VFR meets across the UK, as unfortunately I used to take my now ex girlfriend of 11 years pillion. I have a feeling this beautiful VFR will be my own little therapy.

    All the best,
    Steve

Steve, great bike! You will get absolutely no debate from me whatsoever. I would be a kook if I tried to argue with the facts you posted, now wouldn't I? So, fear not, nothing but pure 100% American-made agreement here.

Man for 1600 pounds, what is that - just under 3,000 bucks? What a steal, congratz!

*Edit: Wow just ran the conversion and 2300 an change?!?! I have a beautiful, pimped out '09 and I'd probably buy that if I ran across it.

Thankyou for the quick replies guys and I appreciate the comments - I couldn't believe the price too and wondered if I missed something, but so far, already nearly 1500 miles later she is as smooth as butter. This is actually the first 99 VFR I've had and I can really tell the difference with no CAT. She feels a bit wilder than my others! :)

Thanks guys, judging by your reactions I'm even more thrilled how much bike I got for such little money! There is something very sweet about these 5th gens, they feel very special, and when you go by everyone turns their head to ,listen to that low rumbling V4 with the gear driven whine - Just pure motorcycling poetry. All this for £1600 (well I've just sold the pannier for £100 so it's now cost me even less)!

All I need now is for the stormy weather to pass, cheers guys!

Hey VFR Steve, congrats on the new 99! :)
I wanted to ask, in your opinion, between the 5th gen and 6th gen, which one was more conformable on long rides?
Not getting into engine performance or cam actuation, do the two models have any differences in size or riding position?
The reason I'm asking, I'm going to be buying a 5th gen vfr800 hopefully next week, but I'm trying to find out if the 5th gen has a different riding position, I've never sat on a 5th gen vfr800fi yet, only a 6th gen, and that was years ago. Lol

    Hey buddy thanks :)

To be honest for me there isn't much in it, but I'd say the 6th gen perhaps edges it for better comfort (although many say the complete opposite)! The 6th gen has a wider seat and ever so slightly lower foot pegs but you don't really notice this unless you jump from one to the other. Luckily my 5th gen has bar risers which has made a HUGE difference to me, so much so it's probably the most comfortable bike I've ever had! I recently rode 350 miles with only a quick stop to refuel without problems (oh and my 99 has the best fuel mileage of all the VFR's I've had).

I hope that helps, what are you getting? Please let me know how you get on :)

Hey VFR_Steve. Thanks for the info. I'm wanting to pick up a vfr800fi hopefully next week. I went and looked at a 98 today, but it was obvious that the bike had been stored outside in the elements for a few years. It was not in the condition I was looking for.
I have another 98 to look at tomorrow, I'm really hoping it's in better shape.
There is another vfr800fi it's supposed to be in like new condition with less than 6,000 miles on it. Only problem is, it's a 2001. It's got the catalytic converter and 02 sensors. Also it's a thousand more dollars than the others I was looking at. Lol
is it stupid of me to pass on a nice 2001 because of the cat and 02 sensors?
Also looking at 2002 vtec bike. It's a little more than the others, but it's really nice. I didn't want to rule it out, I like the idea of the 5th gen because of the gear driven cams, but I like the look and style of the 6th gen bikes.
That's why I was asking the difference in riding position.

I did have a 2001 VFR for about 3 years and covered about 45,000 miles in that time. To be honest you connot go wrong with either a 98-99 or a 00-01, you do also get the HISS system, stainless steel headers, a weighted footpeg for less vibration and a nice little VFR logo (although someone said somewhere else on the forum this adds extra weight) :playful:

Now that I have ridden my 99, I can definitely tell a difference with the overall smoothness and mid range power, also cruising at slower speeds (30, 40, 50mph) between 4-6k in the rev range doesn't surge or lean out like it does with the CAT and sensors. It something I got used to though with my 01 VFR but on the 6th gens it's A LOT worse and I had to get some 02 eliminator plugs. I've also acked up over 100,00 miles on 3 vtecs and for me the 5th gens are far better in the engine department. It's always been a frustration though, as I think the VTEC VFR (6th gen) is one of the prettiest bikes ever made, I'm still on the fence with the newer version and haven't ridden one.. yet ;)

But sorry I have digressed a bit, there cant be many lower mileage 5th gens out there, that 01 sounds very tempting!

Any other question please fire away, good luck.
