My VF500F came to me with a set of K&N slip on exhausts, but I'd like to take it back to stock. I have a suspicion that the aftermarket exhaust is causing weird gaps in the power band, in addition to sounding slightly douchey. I have the stock exhausts on my parts bike, but my question is, will I need to do anything with the carbs if I switch back? I have no idea if the carbs were re-jetted to match the aftermarket exhaust. I also have no idea how to tell if they were modified. Any suggestions?

K&N slip-ons? That's a new one to me. Cool. I think you'll be o.k. to just put the stock pipes back on and go for a ride to see if it is running to your liking or not. If it is not fueling to your satisfaction, then take the carbs off and take the float bowl off to check which size of jets you have. Jet kits were very popular for those back in the day. You may have "Dynojet" jets in there which are numbered differently than the Keihin jets. Download a manual for your bike so you'll have some idea what you are doing, if you are like me! I remember the dynojet kits giving me bad fuel mileage as well. Another reason to maybe check and see if you have stock or modified jetting.

No, I wish. From the minimum of research I've done I know Kerker made an exhaust specifically for the VF500, but I can't say for certain the one I have is tailored for the bike.
