Great source of information about R/R's can be found at roadstercycle.com. I the Yamaha is made by Shindengen.

If really want to be proactive (which I did on my 2003), get the Series R/R (same price).

Seems like a good price. ($99). Same number of wires, etc.? Any mounting issues? I'll read up elsewhere in the forum also.

So, went through the Drill today...... Connectors were squeaky clean, with no sign of heat/arcing or damage. Stator voltage output checked out fine at idle, and at 5000 rpm. Jammed some DC4 (dielectric grease) in all connectors and reassembled. RR looks original, no sign of any replacement, etc. Tie-wrap around the bundle still in place.

Voltage at the battery terminals though: 13.8 at idle, but as throttle was increased, voltage dropped down progressively to around 13.1/13.2 at 6000 rpm. This is contrary to the thread on "the Drill", where they say to expect a voltage increase as throttle is increased.

Problem looming? My Haynes manual says regulated output should be 14.0 to 14.8V @ 5000 rpm. Gonna check the Honda SM too.

Yeah, if you're getting a good 50-70 VAC on all 3 phase pair combinations while revving and you're charging voltage is still low your R/R is most likely on the way out.

Hey, Knight what was that about the OEM regulator not being garbage? only 20k?! I've got twice that on my Rick's MOSFET and those apparently burst into flames. Lololol :tongue2:

So after you get your awesome new MOSFET R/R upgrade, I'd still recommend removing that white plug and solder splice like so:

If I recall, my OEM R/R was right around the same low 13's charging when I swapped it out at 28K

Thanks for the help, folks. Glad I did the checking today, and will be glad once I have a VM installed permanently on the bike. Yes, the OEM unit does get hot to the touch quite quickly.

Just had a look in my Honda SM, and the values are the same. Although they say to have the headlight's high beam on at the time.

So I need to order up an RR. I guess the FH020AA (SH775) is the way to go. Can anybody reccomend an Ebay vendor? I see lots of them on there, some are in "kit" form, etc. Just want to make sure I get what I need and at a good price... Lol Looks like the connectors etc. are needed, as the new unit has connectors right on the unit.

Maybe I should order two. :) And keep one under the seat!

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/UNIVERSAL-M...ash=item542a287a08:g:VtwAAOSwKtVWuj3T&vxp=mtr

    $97 including the connectors, etc.

Why not get it from Jack ar RoadsterCycle? His service and knowledge are well worth the $3 difference in price! Rather than buying from some unkown vendor.

Hrm not sure. I believe in science and concrete data, so we will have to call the prior owner and asked him exactly how many times he performed the actions on the "never do this" abuse list. I wonder...did he pull the bike out of storage where it has been for 15 years and jump start it with a car to make the sale HAHAHAH HAHAHAHAH. Oh wait, that does happen too often. Sorry for laughing guys. Abuse of a VFR is never funny. Unless you're in the rectifier sales business HAHAHAHAH HAHAHAHAH :tongue2:

That's why I was asking! Lol

But it looks like his kits are almost $40 more including shipping. I need the whole kit (wiring, connectors, etc.), not just the RR. The $97 link I posted was for the whole kit.

    Is he a good vendor?

Hi PuzzleBoy. Yes Jack at roadstercycle is very helpful. I bought the Super Mosfet kit, everything you need is there. And cut out that connector and solder the wires, you are good to go.
Enough about this rr, tell us about that sweet RZ. Not many around anymore...

Go with your gut, some swear by this, and some swear at that. I could throw out what I did, but that would muddy up your thoughts. Thing here is to get it fixed and in that means what ever works for you and your budget, LOL yea get two while you're at it ;) some actually do this.

Lol. I still have a couple RZ500s and a Honda NS400. I was always a 2-stroke guy in my younger days. But I actually haven't touched them in years. I used to fix 'em up and sell them. I've been thinking of selling the whole lot, OEM parts and all.

They're certainly fun to ride though, if only to see the looks on the tree huggers' faces in traffic when they see 4 pipes spewing half burnt oil into the air..... Lol. I guess I better keep one of them.... :)

Have you measured the resistance of your wires? Do you know empirically if they are at their peak performance or otherwise degraded?

Yes, people tell me my RD350LC is burning oil when its idling. Ok, thanks! (I say) HaHa. Ive always had a RD too, since 1980. Nothing like it for a blast. Yours, however... Yowsers. Worth big dough now. Have fun on the Bikes!

Based on the mileage of his bikes and previous statement, I'll guess he doesn't have OCD. so.... No.

This is a joke right? You're kidding? You think that a rudimentary check of a highly stressed component, that gets brittle with age, on a 17 year old high-performance vehicle, is "OCD"? Most likely we will disagree on every topic, not just the rectifier.
