My VF 500 will not start, when I turn the key.
I have new battery, all fuses are ok, clutch in pulled in, and I'm in neutral (green light on)

I'm thinking the start relay, how can I check it?

Or can it be something else?

Have you tried jump starting the bike?

The battery might still be defective even if new. Try to jump something else with the battery just to make sure it can provide enough current under load. It could be a bad switchgear button or a sticking relay. You could try taking the battery out and briefly connecting the positive to the connector on the starter motor. The negative needs to be earthed onto the bike. This way all you are doing is supplying current to the starter motor and it should turn. Bike wont start of course. But then you will know the battery is OK, the starter motor is OK and the engine is not seized.

Yes I had my brothers push the bike, and it started up right away, with out any problems.

I will try to connect direct 12v to the starter, and see what happens.

    Where is the gearswitch?

Sometimes the starter button can corrode so maybe open up the right hand side throttle switchgear block and clean up the contacts.
The starter motors on these can be a bit temperamental so you need to make sure it's working OK

Can you hear a click when you push the start button? There should be a relay and a Magnetic Switch clicking, even if there is not enough power to start the bike. Download a service manual, and buy yourself an inexpensive multi-meter. Here in Canada, I can buy one at "Canadian Tire" for $20.00. (About $16.00 U.S.)

    No I can't hear that.
And I think I'm close now, when I connect 12v direct to the starter, the starter runs.
And if I connect 12v to the red/yellow wire in the starter relay, the engine starts, so it must be the start button.

I there an easy way to take out the right side handle?
So I can take out the start button.

    Update:

I have 12v though the start switch (where does the red/yellow wire goes to from the start switch?)
The start motor run when I give it 12v direct.

You say you have 12 volts through the start switch, this must be with the ignition on and the start button pushed. If this is the case the red/yellow wire at the solonoid should also have 12 volts with the ignition on and the start button pushed. If this red/yellow does not have power the problem is somewhere in the wire. You have proven the solonoid is not the problem

I think I've found the problem, the red/yellow wire has been replaced, and the bike can start again...........
So it must have been a bad wire.

After a 60km "test" drive the status is (with stop for a ice :), everything OK again :- ))))))
So now it is back on the road, in the Danish summer.....

Funny that a wire from the connection in front, to the start relay in back, goes bad............

All right! ...and they say the first Gen. bikes were flawed. I'm just waiting to see what a 2003 model will look like in 2033!
Lets have some pictures of the bike on the road in the Danish summer! I am not sure I can even guess what your Country looks like!

Wow, two very nice machines! Is the Corvette rare over there? Very nice 500. Did the full fairing come from the factory? In North America ours only had the 1/4 fairing. Hopefully I can visit and ride through Denmark one day. Have you ever been to Canada?
