Thinking of picking up a cruise control system for my vfr, ive been on a bit of a lot of group rides lately, many of those are created by Harley guys, so they take the longest straightest route to the location since they cant corner all that well with the big baggers or they are afraid to... so we spend a lot of time cruising at speeds and my wrist is getting sore from it after a few hours of riding... what would you recommend for my 2002 vfr?

Scubalong help me put a throttle lock on my bike a few years back while I was on an R3 trip. Well. Actually, he put it on. Love that thing and use it all the time. Even when in a hilly area I often use it. When setting up the tension on those, you can set it so that you can easily adjust the throttle and yet when you let go, it holds. That takes a whole pile of pressure off your wrists.

STAY AWAY FROM THOSE SLIP ON THROTTLE PADDLES! Those are dangerous if you are not used to them. Even a throttle lock should be used a lot when you first get one put on more so that your muscle memory learns to deal with it if you end up in an emergency situation.

Things like cruise controls are a precursor to having a VFR that weighs as much as a Harley.

I'd just install better riding buddies and be done with it.

Throttlemeister. Looks like a bar end. Used it to go from Milwaukee to LA and back last fall. Worked great. No where near as good as electronic, but on the flats it worked well. On grades not so much, but still allows you to rest your right hand some.

Throttlemeisters come is sets. One is the throttle control, the other is a bar end. Had same on my VFR for 20+ years. Never a problem. The paddles are an el cheapo fix and they break. The cigar cutter "lock" by accounts work fine. Throttlemeisters are of the screw type so the resistance is variable. Externally they are cosmetically conservative but I suppose some of those kinky leather fringes could be glued on for those who need that sort of thing.

Cruise controls??? Just one more unneeded farkle to crap oot.

I'd recommend not putting yourself through the torture of riding with Hardlys.

I wanted a discrete throttle lock (not strictly permitted in some parts of the EU) so went with this install..

Once you have the grip spring adjusted correctly it should remain ready to go for many years, and provides welcome relief to your throttle arm on long trips.

In an emergency Vista is not an actual throttle lock like the NEP. It is just a pressure clamp - meaning once you apply enough twist to the grip you can always return the throttle fully, even if the Vista is fully engaged. It is also fairly cheap. As my bike had heated grips I found I could not fit the bar clamp until I thinned down the clamp a bit. I used a fine belt sander to remove excess thickness, progressively checking, until it went into the available gap, and then ensured it was positioned so it did not foul the heated grip wiring.

Setting up the grip tension is the fiddly bit but only needs to be done once - and best done well away from traffic. Take suitable spanners and then by adding removing tiny washers you can adjust the grip pressure so the throttle stays put when applied but can still be easily moved if required to increase the speed or indeed return the throttle fully off.

If you plan any long haul trips this is one of the best VFM add-ons to add to your VFR.

I use a combination of two things that work for me; throttlemeister and a throttlerocker.

Ya. I had one of those for a while and just could not get used to it. Rode with it from South Central California on my way home here in BC. Tossed it on the way.

The rocker is not for everyone I guess but it helps me with the carpel thing. Its annoying as hell not to have it now that I'm used to it. I just got back from Asheville, North Carolina is amazing.

Ya. I saw benefits but you do need to get used to it. I just found that the benefits I saw did not make up for the awkwardness of its use.
