We hit some tar snakes in a corner on Saturday. Serious pucker factor.

Buddy pulled off thinking his wheel was coming off.

Hit some in the wet coming back from Asheville , thought my ass collapsed into a black hole! Whomever thought that they are acceptable for road repairs needs to be dipped in a vat of the stuff.

Anyone that underestimates or doesn't respect tar snakes is due to be bitten by one. It only takes once. Georgia is the snake capital of the world. Texas is right there with them.

Yes, on the highway maintenance czars being tarred and feathered.

Oh yea I'm with you guys on this one. the other day I tried to ramp it up on the CBR and all I got was a rear tire kick out , thought for sure i hit an oil patch or something simular, nothing caught my eye, only to double check and it's the freaking tar crack job. I mean Holy shit! really????? Now I've been quite aware of these critters and know all to well what happens in the blink of an eye, so of coarse I thought it was something else, road glare and all made me re thinking pay attention, and now that its 90+ its just grease waiting to bite some one. SMH.

It's such a wonderful feeling flying down even a straight road with snakes on a hot day with the rear end just wondering around. I hate those things.

I have hit them out here, try to avoid them. Question, how many have gone down, or just scared into over-reacting.

I might be wrong about this (and New Zealand has no real snakes at all) but tar snakes just deform when you ride over them don't they? Like jelly so you feel like you've lost traction, but they aren't actually slippery (when dry).

I do treat them with caution especially on a hot day.

You know, it's bad enough that there might be a real critter around the corner. It's bullshit this one is man made. Why don't they throw some marbles out there ta boot.

Gonna write the DOT and tell them they need to sand em. Mentioning liability suits might do it.

Happy to send some snakes over to NZ but as they are a protected species here I guess they would not allow us to send you any. As for riding over them it always puts the wind up you because they can wrap around the rim and flick up under the seat and by that stage they are really angry and wanting to bite you on the bum. As for the road repair type very rare to see any here and they are usually only a temporary fix till the surface is repaired properly

Hey, it would be like chip seal which is a good surface after enough time.

"After enough time" being the operative term. Our local road builders LOVE chip seal (must be cheap), but they don't seem to love getting rid of the excess chip afterwards. I had a couple of decent "moments" yesterday crossing patches of residual chips pushed aside by car tyres. At least you can see tar snakes, you have to be very observant to spot loose chip on a chip sealed road.

Yeah, you're right but they usually come in with sweepers after a week or so.

Don't like tar snakes, luckily they don't use them much here.
I can tell you that a real snake (or huge Goanna in my case) is not much fun either.
On a tight corner carrying some speed, it kicks both tyres out, first front, followed by rear.
Needed to eat prunes to get my arse to let go of my undies after it.

Wait until your front tire hits a wet one at 100 mph. Kinda makes your anus teeth just bite down really hard and rip a hole out of your saddle.....so I'm told. Worst road snakes I have EVER run over were in Twisp Wa. Riding over those ones, straight, and at low speeds and you tend to spin or slide.
