I'm a 6th Gen owner now.

Long story short some kids cut me off in an old Kia and I smashed my 4th gen into their door and wrote it off. :crushed:

Luckily I made it out with minor injuries and a short hospital stay but my poor 4th gen :frown-new:

I decided I should hang up my 4th gen hat and not try to replace it with another.

I was looking at 5th gens when I read and was told from a few people that the 6th gen is a great VFR. The VTEC wasn't as bad as everyone says it is and the throttle response/fueling is great.
I was trying my best to stay away from the VTEC and the chain driven cams but I found one at a good deal. It was in good shape so I bought it.




Right off the bat I had to replace both front rotors cause they were warped well past Honda Spec. I'm now trying to figure out what's causing an occasional low idle and an odd "flat spot" around 5,000rpm. (Feels almost like a stutter)
I'm hoping fresh plugs, Air filter and Fuel filter will help. Looks like this bike hasn't seen much maintenance :uncomfortableness:

I really miss the buttery smooth fueling of my 4th gens carbs.

 

Good to hear you came out of this not too bad. You should be able to get something for your stay in the hospital from dickweed's insurance company.

You gotta update your details though.

 

Flat spot is somewhat normal on earlier 6th gens. Ditch the snorkel, do the flapper mod, and rip out those PAIR valves (use blocking plates) and it will straighten out. Air filter that needs to be replaced can also cause this.

I wasn't hurt badly enough (thankfully) that I can get any compensation from the other party other than usually insurance stuff. (i.e. replacing my gear) It's the unfortunate ways of the Province of Ontario and the stranglehold the Insurance companies have over the Government here.

From all that I have been reading yeah it appears it is normal.

The PAIR system just pumps air into the exhaust to assist with emissions and unburnt gasses. (I blocked it on my 4th gen.) Blocking it won't help.

From all the research I've been doing on this forum and others, there isn't any reason to believe that disabling the PAIR or any of the "airbox mods" would help with the "flat spot."

 

Well ... good news. I've done all the mods and it has significantly helped the flat spot on BOTH of my '02 VFRs .... there's your evidence!

And yes, the PAIR valve does do that - which also screws with your O2 sensor and causes some interesting things to happen. Just try it (use marbles to make it easy to reverse), nothing to lose.

Only a PC can fully solve it though.

 

Good looking bike, I'm sure with a bit of advice from this forum you will have that bike sorted and be enjoying it in no time.. The VFR is new to me and it is growing on me considerably every time I ride it...have fun

Thanks everyone. I did the Flapper and Snorkle mod and it feels like it has even less low end now.

I test rode a few 5th gens and they felt way better. A lot like my 4th gen did. So I bought the 5th gen and will sell the 6th gen.
