New 84 VF1000 owner HELLO, = Fuel Feed Lines in Tank Plugged ??

    Hello. . . All

New member here, and proud new owner of an AWSOME 1984 VF1000F
    vF100001.jpg vF100002.jpg vF100003.jpg

Recently found this baby on the local craigslist, has been stored for 20 years, and looks amazing.
Was a 2 owner bike, but only ridden by first owner for 12,000 miles. Second owner bought and stored only.
    Believe it or not . . . . I got it for $500 yea $500 not a typo = OHHHHHHHHHHH YEAAAAA Was I a happy guy that day !!

I am now in the process of bringing the old girl back to life, and as expected the tank will need cleaned and lined of which is no issue, but the fuel level sending unit was rendered useless, so I am in need of a replacement, and was hoping there was an avenue for used parts here or some direction as to aftermarkets that are applicable.

My plan is to de-grease / insert nuts bolts / Vinegar - Water Shake rattle and roll = Multiple times / etch with muratic acid / rinse / rinse / rinse = Would like to hear any experienced input as to the best tank liner around these days, or preferred preparation methods other then what I mentioned above.

I do want a tank liner that will leave a solid "New" colored finish inside, NOT a translucent / clear finish were you can see all the rust pits through it.

The old girls in remarkable shape, NEVER down, and the scuffs / smudges it does have were from 20 years of garage life.

Thanks in advance for any info / input or direction ... Appreciate it !!

Fantastic find, what is the problem with sending unit? I have taken mine apart and cleaned them, fairly basic arm move a tab over a variable resistor (wire coil).

It is severely rusted . . . so didn't think about attempting to fix it as it was froze and corroded.

Just for S&G = I will throw it in a vinegar / water bath and see what happens = nothing to loose at this point

Well I soaked the float sensor in some vinegar / water (should of taken a b4 pic = it was bad) and I'll be dammed it cleaned up pretty nice . . . will need to see if I can open it up and completely clean it fingers crossed.

Any suggestions on the best deal / place to get some carb kits ?

After lubing cylinders and injecting Carb Cleaner & Sea foam into the carbs, and a 4 days soak = Bike fired up and runs pretty good After the burn out of soaking fluids and a plug change.

Still need tires before any road test as these originals @@ are severely dry cracked, and there is no way I can ride it calmly LOL.

Not sure they are needed, but after #20 years of sitting I am feeling like the carbs should be pulled / soaked and a kit put in.

Need to do some reading on synchronizing the carbs - Have a #4 tube murc stick, but at a glance not seeing any vac ports ?

Next project will be the Tank - Still open to any advice on best liners out there now with full color pigment. . . . . . .

I think you should inspect all the rubber parts, especially the carb boots. Ozone & polution will harden most all the seals, o-rings, tubing just like the tires. I had to toss what looked like a new set of Metzelers as well. Partzilla has ALL the pieces you need, like the little boots on the brake bolts. Just a fact of life with a bike of that age. I replaced just about all of mine.

Well . . . . Bike is up and running good !!! Waaa Hooo

Soaked the tank in #2 Lrg Bottles of Awesome concentrated Cleaner + 6 Cups of Vinegar Then filled with Boiling water = left to soak and slosh around randomly for a week . . . . . . . . Tank Cleaned out Much better then expected to the point a liner will not be needed.

Current issues is = #3 holes in tank behind removed petcock . . . . CLeared line for Fuel output, but the twwo other holes Normal and Reserve Flow are plugged Solid = ANy Suggestions ?

I applied positive and negative pressure to both the tank and the holes, and probed in with flexible wire, but they seem plugged solid, and nowway to see / tell what the other ends inside the tank looks like.

Would REALLY appreciate any suggestions / input

Well hell, what a find. it's worth what ever trouble you have. There's not to many of those VFs around in what looks to be a great shape. On the matter of the plugged lines, that's going to take some fine surgery in what you are all ready doing sticking a wire up there and spin it around. I'd try to see if speed-O cable would work, or a wire like small cable that has a twist to it, find some SS fish lure. it will act like a drill bit with out over powering, damage the fuel tube...(hopefully) I have done this on other tanks with success. But it will takes patience again way worth it , you have a great one there. yes keep an eye out on those rubber lines, might also think about replacing brake lines too.

Hey RVFR. . . . Yea it was "quite the find"

Do you, or Does anybody have any idea what is at the other end of the normal / reserve feed holes / Lines inside the tank??

Are they just passage ways / tubes or are there screens on the end ?
