Hi I'm buying a 5th gen 1999 vfr and it's a Canadian bike that's in kilometers instead of miles per hour. I don't care about changing the odometer or that part. I just want to change the speedometer and I don't know how hard it is or if I need to change or adjust anything else while I do it. Any advice would be appreciated.

    There's a few options here I think.

You could just replace the face on the speedo with a new one marked in miles. The odometer would still read in km, but that would be the cheap option, with some minor bike surgery involved. Check this link: http://vfrworld.com/forums/showthread.php/44026-New-gauge-faces

You could install a Speedohealer (http://www.healtech-electronics.com/products/sh/) ($110) you'd be able to set this so that both the speedo and odo read the true speed in miles not km. As I understand it, the speedohealer is installed in the wire between the speed sensor at the countershaft and the speedo/odo and allows you to adjust the pulse rate, so easy to do. As a bonus, you'll have the only VFR800 with a 260mph speedo! How cool is that!

The big fix would be to buy either a new ($122 on partzilla) or second hand speedo unit and swap out the existing one. The odo would still be in km.

Or...you could re-program your brain to accept that maybe the metric system is superior and go with that...

I personally don't have a problem with the metric system. I use it in school all the time.

Welcome dwargen. Where in Maine are you from? My parents live in Bradley and I have family all over the state but most are in the Bangor area. Im there at least twice a year to visit. Hope to ride my bike there sometime soon.
