Soo ... apparently one of my buddies is a whiz at PhotoShop.

My rims are black, but I plasti-dipped them over the weekend as you know to this:

Some of these were him messing around trying to be funny ... you can figure out which those are. :)

    Which is your favourite??

The gold is growing on me but my tastes always prove way too mundane to what others like so I always lean towards the bland options.

I have seen bikes like yours that have the grey wheels like 2004-2006 or even a darker graphite color that look good to me. My '02 has the black and and I have been considering painting them grey/silver like that 04-06. Seeing you do yours has rekindled my interest in changing mine.

I still love what you did.

Now out of these other options, the orangey color really pops, but not annoyingly.

With those two colors, it really defines the rims from the tire and discs. The other colors seem to make it all blend together.

Well, except for the pink. Maybe that could be temporary when you're taking your gal out on the town. Lol

Haha! She rarely hops on the bike with me - she's always wanted a Virago, actually.

The first pic the gold is a bit to much IMO but I like it. I think #1, #2, or #5 look great.

I've been thinking that the color of the wheels on the 8th gen would look good with the silver, but after seeing #2 & #4 I am rethinking that idea...will still probably still go black or a really dark metallic grey, would be interested in a trade for my silver ones if someone local was interested

I like #5. Is it copper colored? I've just inquired a powder coater if he could do my black VFR wheels in Gold. He said $150 a wheel. He added that the paint on VFR's is really thick and a pain to strip, so that's why the price was higher. Maybe I'll do it the next time I need new tires. Black and Gold would look cool!

No idea ... it's just one we made up. My powder coat guy is going to custom mix some stuff to make it happen.

I like the first "Gaudy Gold" Set but that's just me. I think that color would look good on my red 6th gen.

Gold is hard to get right on powder coating. Be sure and get a sample before your guy shoots the color.

Powdercoaters could drum up business by throwing in a free Tshirt with each job.

"My wheels are Flakey Rootbeer, Yours?"

Best bet is to specify using Prismatic. The site has golds and metallics by the page. Prismatic supplies samples with purchases of stock over 5lbs.

Like paint and other coatings that are red and some blues and greens, gold in paint is transparent. There are some real gold "paints" called shell gold that are used for illumination and they are pricy..

Like paint, what can determine the final hue using these transparent materials is the undercoat. This is the same deal as candy colors.

On wheels do not expect a gold look like ya see on jewelry. Jewelry and even real gold leaf has been polished. Clearcoating over the gold adds some to the effect but get powdercoating to look like the real stuff, a shipload of prep smoothing out cast or forged wheels would take some doing. This could add to creating some adhesion problems or too much millage and subsequent cracking of the finish.

Prismatic has a great website and the folks on that end are super helpful.

Yep, that's what I was getting at. A lot of people expect GOLD and get something less and are disappointed with the look. As BB says, there are all kinds of unique and beautiful powder coated finishes to be had. Make sure the people that shoot your color know that they are doing. Correct application and cure times are critical for longevity.
