So, I decided to try it myself. I was hoping the color would be a lot darker. The can sample color seemed a lot darker ... I wanted it do be a darker copper ...

    Thoughts?

The finish looks really good, not sure about the silver/ gold combo though...I personally love the black wheels on the silver bikes

Looks very good, I can't get those results, the can sprayers are so goopy.

How much dip did it take to do the one wheel? Did you put down a base color before the bronze?

One aerosol can per wheel. No base. 4 coats.

Looks about the same color that Tom powder coats the CB Supersport wheels for members over there.

Well ... just finished remounting the front wheel, calipers, and alignment. I would have been done sooner but I misplaced my torque wrench a few weeks back it would seem - good news is that I found it!

It's midnight and I'm beat ... going to roll it out into the sun tomorrow. When I took that photo, it was right close to sunset so the sun was low in the sky and hitting it straight on.

A few notes about the product:

    1. If you want to see what a colour might look like before you powder coat, this is the product to do it with.
    2. If you want to change your wheel colour frequently, this will be your product.
    3. This is not your product if you want a long lasting paint job that doesn't require up-keep (reapplication)
    4. It looks like it goes on goopy but it smoothes out quickly. This is what the Protect_Dip 2.0 claims over Plasti-Dip.
    5. The finish looks really good and has almost a semi-gloss look to it already - no glossifier or base needed.

I think it looks good Jeff. For shits and giggles, maybe try adding some highlights to the bike with the same colour. You can always remove it if you don't like it. If it were more copper colour, I don't think I would like it as much.

Looks good. Keep us posted on how it likes chain lube. Nice alternative to paint and powdercoat if it's durable. I'd love to get rid of my black wheels.

Be really careful when cleaning chain now. I read somewhere that chain cleaner goes right through that stuff. I 'think' someone said something about even the chain lube having some effect on it but putting some type of coating (maybe the glossiier or some kind of plasti-cip protector coating?) helped protect it. I can't remember exactly as I was just skimming some articles. You might want to check to be sure.

When shooting this stuff withoot a respirator or thinking that one of those $.99 dust masks is going to work, best to wait awhile for seeing if the colors are right. Nice mix of solvents in the stuff. Great for huffers.

For the hardcore types, shoot some on the bikes headers and fire up the bike in a closed space. A great mix of CO and whoopie juice

    See " plastidip MSDS".

Yah, Naptha is one of the solvents used ... I had the heater (I have a large industrial ceiling space heater that runs on 220v w/relay) running, a window open, the and door open to vent between coats

The product is supposed to be durable - however - I could see how anything with solvents (chain cleaner) would wreck the finish.

@catherder - This is just temporary so I can see if I like the color combo. The rims will go to powder coat this winter once I have made a final decision on the color.

I love how it looks. This is a good way to view colors temporarily before going permanent as you mention.
    What was the cost involved?
Have you mounted your new tires also?

It cost $17.99 CAD per can. 1 Can = 1 Rim Coverage

I have not mounted the new tires yet ... holding out ... I put so many miles on every week that I'm holding out as long as I can before putting the new tires on. :)

The VM&P Naptha is the least of the solvents that make shooting this stuff an experience rather than just a plain old task. ( VM&P= Varnish Makers & Painters Naptha) Similar to Stoddard Solvent and very close to cigarette lighter fluid and barbeque starter. The fumes from the Hexane, Toulene and MEK fractions are the best ones for getting a real great buzz unless they rise and get to that cieling heater before they get up your nose. Problem solved by solvent...

MSDS sheets cover a shitload of information on these plastics. Plastidip is under the TAP Plastics umbrella. The MSDS also has info on storage flammibility and degradation. The sheets are in place by law as well as being informational since manufacturers tend to downplay potential hazards. Sort of like Honda telling you that riding a bike and mixing it up with a semi ain't gonna happen.

I sure hope Jeff doesn't post pix of mounting his tires, a Canadian thing or not!

The permanent solution is paint or powdercoat, anodizing or even plating. Little correlation between what is available in paint or powdercoat colorwise. Chain lube mixed with brake dust is difficult at best to keep clean on rear wheels. The dozens of cleaners on the market make cleaning this coating an iffy situation. I can see some dude trying to get the goo off a wheel with a pressure washer or a car wash wand and the stuff (mostly) coming off in bits. This is how new epithets and nifty new cuss words are born.. ;)

Yah. This is very short term ... especially for motorcycles I think.

if you take a heat gun and run it over the surface of the wheel it will remelt it and melt out most of the imperfections if your nozzle gets all junked up.. i learned that if i sit the cans in the sun while i paint or an hour or so before i paint the plasti dips come out very good compared to room temp cans... also do not let it sit more than 4 minutes between coats or the tip will dry and clog up.. you can take the top off and put it in a plastic bag with brake cleaner and it will melt the plasti dip out of the nozzle..
